* * * * Drengin.net and GalCiv After 1 Year? * * * *

Frogboy,

Would you please clarify for me if people that bought GalCiv will be able to, after 1 Year still be able to come online here and update their game or not?

From what it says in the Drengin.net tab in SDC it sure does seem that Stardock wants people to buy it every year of their life, for life.

QUOTE:

With Drengin.net, people can get access to all of Stardock's games (GalCiv, LightWeight Ninja, The Corporate Machine, Stellar Frontier) plus everything we create that's new for an entire year after it's released.
________________________________________________________

1. Will we have to BUY updates after one year is up?

Or. . .

2. Is there to be NO further updates after 1 Year is up?

Or. . .

3. Will we be able for life to get free updates for GalCiv for as long as you put them out?

I hope I made sense.

Thanks

Also, could you please clarify the situation if you upgrade GalCiv standalone to Drengin.net? I have one more day to do it, and would really like to, for $20, but not if it cuts me out of support after a year where I would've gotten it otherwise.

I'll be disappointed if nobody answers by then, because the full D.net price is just too much to pay when I already have the only game currently offered on it that I want.

The drengin.net sub has been extended to 18 months. Theres a message on the website about it. AFAIK that includes the people who upgrade, like me. The info in SDC on my expiry is now October 2004.

And Brad has said, that when your subscription runs out, you keep what you've d/l'ed. You won't be able to d/l any more till you re-subscribe. I suppose they'll have moved on to other games at that point, though! Or a sequel....

Yes. When you have Drengin.net you will still be abel to get updates to GalCiv after a year.

Are you saying to get updates after this it will cost users $69.95 a year? That seems a bit high for updates to one game, you think?

I would also like to know if a year and half or two years from now I get a new system and want to bring GalCiv up to the point I had it installed at, will I have to pay to do this?

At whatever point they stop updating GalCiv - which will probably come before the year is up as they'll be supporting TPM and whatever else comes out of the pipe by then - just archive the installation with SDC. SDC will allow to install from an archive now and forever more, it just won't let you download anything after your subscription expires.

I cannot answer definitively, but if GalCiv works like the rest of Stardock's software, once that year is up, if you don't renew some sort of a sub (which, incidentally, if much less than the initial price), then you are not able to obtain anything that comes out after that point.

It won't work quite like Object Desktop. Instead, when you buy Drengin.net you will continue to get updates to the individual games on there after your subscription expires. What you won't get are new games or games that are in beta.

Doesn't really bother me if my subscription runs out...by the time it does, im 100% certain that i would have moved on.

Frogboy,

That still does not answer my question.

Will it cost users $70.00 a year for updates to 1 game (i.e. GalCiv) after this time is up?

Also, Will I always be able to DL updates to the point I paid for no mater how far in to the future? (see my above post)

I think Frogboy made it pretty clear that you'll get GalCiv updates forever because you bought the game. The Drengin.net sub is good for 18 months (right now anyway) and will get you *all* the games available. If you renew, you get another years worth of new games. If not, you get no new games but continue to get updates for the games you already have.

bonscott,

It is anything but clear. Nowhere do I read GalCiv owners will get updates for life in his posts.

Please point this out for me so I can see it as well.

****** Frogboy ******

Please, clarify as people obviously can not figure out what you are saying.

"Instead, when you buy Drengin.net you will continue to get updates to the individual games on there after your subscription expires."

You will get updates after subscription expires...

What else can he say....... :CONGRAT:

OK, my question is how does one get an upgrade? I can find no option for it at Stardock Central, nor by doing a search of all products.

Frankly, I am more than happy with 'just' GalCiv, but I really want to support Stardock further, so I want to pay the extra $20 whether or not I DL the other games.

Now *that* is a sure sign of an outstanding product and company! :D

Have a good one,

Frogboy post: "Instead, when you buy Drengin.net you will continue to get updates to the individual games on there after your subscription expires. What you won't get are new games or games that are in beta."

Toothy, how more clear can this statement be? If you don't understand it, please go back to basic English class. Please read along with me: After your Drengin.net sub expires, you still get updates on the games you purchased (such as GalCiv). However, after the sub expires you no longer have access to any new games or betas. Clear?

Wendy, see the sticky up above for "how to get beta's early" of something like that. There is a link to the updgrade as well as a coupon code for $10 off. However, the coupon expired yesterday. Doesn't hurt to try it though.

Done! Yay! I couldn't use the coupon, though.
Ah well, they deserve that extra $10 anyway.

bonscott,

Try being a bit less rude in life, it works much better that way.

Also, Why not try reading it with me this time.

Let's break it down here.

Frogboy says:

"It won't work quite like Object Desktop. Instead, when you buy Drengin.net you will continue to get updates to the individual games on there after your subscription expires. What you won't get are new games or games that are in beta."

"Instead, when you "buy" Drengin.net you will continue to get updates to the individual games on there after your subscription expires."

Now, let's see. Did every person who bought GalCiv also "buy" Drengin.net? Not that I know of yet.

Drengin.net is $70.00, and people only paid $40.00 for GalCiv so I do not think they are one in the same.

Nowhere did I see where we bought into a Subscription of any nature when we installed GalCiv.

So, why don't you politely straighten me out here and show me with HIS words Not Yours where it says we will get free updates for life because we bought the game.

******* FROGBOY ********

Please, make a Clear, and Plain statement of What is reality in regard to GalCiv owners and the future of patches.

Dude, since GalCiv is a subset of Drengin, I still don't think he could have been any clearer short of pointing that out. He wasn't "clearer" because it didn't occur to him that he needed to spell it out. When you login to the Stardock fileserver with SDC it will check out what your subscription/serial was for and it will only display what you're eligible to get.

It's very simple and I can't believe you're making such a damn federal case out of your inability to figure the statement out.

Hmmm, let's see....one more try.....

1) You buy GalCiv. You have updates for GalCiv for the life of the product, period.

2) You buy GalCiv and *upgrade* to Drengin.net subscription. Now you not only get GalCiv but all other games for a year (or whatever). If you don't renew that then you no longer get all games offered on Drengin.net but guess what? You have a separate "subscription" (if you will) to GalCiv which gets you updates.

3) You just have a Drengin.net subscription. You get all games including GalCiv. You let your sub lapse and you no longer get new games or betas but still get support for games you had during that timeframe (GalCiv, Corporate Machine, etc.)

This is the last and final time that I will say the same dang thing over and over. If you still can't figure it out then I suggest you return your game and play solitare of something.

By the way, this is all spelled out in the Drengin.net FAQ. I suggest you take a look at it.

Let me show you what a Plain Statement would be:

"Everyone that purchased GalCiv will be able to Download updates as long as they own the game."

or

"After one Year you will not be allowed to Download any updates unless you purchase Drengin.net."

You know I did take your advice and go look at the Drengin FAQ.

Very enlightening. Try this on for size since I do not seem to get it.

QOUTE From Drengin.net:
____________________________________________________________________________
Miscellaneous

What happens at the end of the year? Do I get to keep my games?

Yes, you can keep whatever you have at the end of your subscription - you just can't download new versions or new games.
____________________________________________________________________________

Try and look closely here; "you just can't download new versions. . ."

So, what you see as so clear, is either wrong or I do not understand the word "can't."

And this once more assumes Everyone has a Subscription to Drengin.net that bought the game.

Frogboy, Would you PLEASE just say straight up what it going to happen after one Year is up.

Did I miss the special offer to Drengin.net? I didn't get a chance to subscribe due to my schedule at home and I keep hearing about $20, but on the website it says $69.95 or something like that. What do I need to do at this point to become a Drengin.net member?
