Alliance win

The way the alliance victory is mentioned in the game it sounds as if all you need to do is ally with all the majors your are not at war with. In my current game I have done that and when I bring up the menu it says "Alliance victory 100%" but the game is still going on...Do you in fact have to kill all the races you are not allied with to win?
On a related note, do you have to be the same morality as a race to ally with them? My current civ is evil and the damned Acredians (sp? the yellows) just wouldn't move up to close, I even saved and gave them all my systems (except Sol), ships and cash. But no, they were still friendly. And this is after I saved them from the Altarians, joined their wars, fed them ships and tech and built them a load of starbases. In the end I just DoWed them since I though that'd gove me the alliance voctory anyway.

I've won via Alliance just from being close with the major powers. Unless they went behind my back and signed alliances with my Diplomats.. but thats what we call a bug if they did

@ David:

1. Yes, you do have to eliminate all other major races which are not allies to win via Diplomatic victory. The description that the game gives you of a diplomatic victory is incorrect. Think how easy it would be to get just one ally and then quickly declare war on everyone else if it actually DID work that way ;)

2. Gifts can only get you to Friendly. You need to have a race dependant on you for a certain % of their income for a certain number of turns to turn Friendly into Close. Hard to do on larger maps where tax revenue tends to outweighs trade. Try sending all of your trade routes to a single race to maximize the chances of meeting this requirement. (I don't know what the exact percent requirement is. 25%? 30%? Variable?)

3. Alignment affects relations in this way: If you're evil, the good races won't like you regardless of what you do. The Altarians will hate you constantly, and to a lesser extent the Torians won't like you either.

I find Diplomatic victory difficult on larger maps, but easy on smaller ones.

Hmm, they've been getting 43% of their income from me for a while now but they still aren't close. I'm not worried about the good races though, I'm at war with both of them and they are being crushed :)

I am allied with the remaining major races ( I had to eliminate the Yor because the Alterians asked me to (the Yor were only Friendly at the time while I was allied with everyone else)). But there is no diplomatic victory yet. The Alterians ARE at war with a minor race (which I can not find), so do I have to eliminate THEM before I can win?

No...you only have to ally with all the major races. Why don't you send me your save game so that I can take a look at it?

i didn't think you needed to have them depend on you trade wise. the torians i've left alone before, no trade treaty, a little gifting, and they went close after i declared war on the drengins.

"Gifts can only get you to Friendly." is wrong.
I won one game by feeding the Arceans from war to close + allied in a single turn by giving them trade goods, all my techs, and each star system I had but Sol, one by one (on a tiny map, gave about 4 stars).
