Annoying Problem

Today is the first time I have seen it happen on my new computer. On my pervious one it happened a lot, but I got a new one (for other reasons).

The problem?

Well I had decided to alt+tab out of GalCiv to take a small break from my hard work of building some 200 TS's (yea, I have a lot of time on my hands)...everything has been going well, in fact I've been alt+tabbing out the the game on occasion all day. Other than the rare lock-up/crash, everything looked fine.

Well recently, I alt+tabbed out of the game for a while, I went off to d/l some things, check out whats up on SDC, and then, right when I clicked on GalCiv at the bottom of my screen to go back playing it, ...the computer decided to reset itself :( . Its one of the most annoying problem I have found, and even on my last computer (though it was more frequent) it still did the same thing.

Any help on solving this problem would be appreciated, if you need any of my computer's specs. lemme know, I'll post it up or e-mail. Thanks to anyone who helps.

Well, it won't keep it from happening, but I always make sure to save my game before doing that. It only takes a few seconds and can potentially save you from repeating a lot of game actions. :)

Or you could set the autosave to go off every turn, so you don't have to worry about saving it manually. Although the autosave has caused my game to crash now and then.

Yea, that's the bad thing, I made nearly 200 TS's, and errr, I didn't save before the game reset my comp. :sniff!:

How often do you have the game set to autosave? You might be able to salvage something.

We've had trouble reproducing the Alt-Tab problem.

What operating systems are on your two computers? Can you please e-mail me your system information? [email protected]

Please include your direct x version, video + sound card, etc.

You need to leave more info man. What is your OS? what kind of box are you running it on? How OLD is the machine.. Are we supposed to guess? ;p

I never do.

Comp. Specs:
2.53Ghz Pentium 4
640 MB DDR SDRAM
Geforce 4 MX 440 video card
Sound (no sound card added, I have whatever came with the comp.)
Windows XP Home Ed.
DirectX 9.0

I bought this comp. brand new, about 2 weeks ago.

If there's anything else I missed let me know, I'll try to find it. Also to add one more thing, I get sound in GalCiv, but I don't hear any music playing except when i speak to a race, or when a even happens. I have 1.03.54 ...so maybe I'm missing a file :notsure: .

for your music problem: look in the option screen there is tap called something like "user defined playlist" toggle it off if it is switched on. I had a similar problem.

Thanks Midnight, that solved the music problem. The last thing is that big crash I had. Speaking of it, I dunno if this other bit of info. would help, but I decided to play a little Civ3, I alt+tabbed out of that game, and while I was working out of it, my comp. 'atuo'-reset again (Its happend quite a bit when I played Civ3 on my old comp., just figured this might be worth mentioning).

Ok I went through device manager and updated everything...amongst a few things that were actually updated, my video drivers was one of them, so I might be in luck with that :D . Tonight when I get off work, I'll go site surfing to find more updates, and manually update some more divers if they need them.

I'll keep you all posted on what goes on. In the meantime I'll c/w troubleshooting.

Upgrade to DirectX 9.0a if you don't have 9.0a.

I don't mean to bump this topic back up, but I felt it was necessary especially for ppl who were having lock-up/crashes ...or in my severe case, auto-comp-reset.

I downloaded DirectX 9.0a (I had 9.0). And I went to the website that made my video card and updated those drivers as well. Then I went to the device manager, and updated my video card (display drivers).

Apparently the problem has been rectified, and I haven't had a single problem with GalCiv since then. (Even after numerous alt-tabbing). I will continue to keep a eye out, and I just got smart exception (a little late, but better now than never).
