War Party the best party to pick?

War Party the best party to pick?

Sure, that's a cutesy title as all parties have their strengths, but I'm starting to think that the War Party (+50% hitpoints) is the 'power' pick of the political parties. Here's my reasons why:

1. It's worth 5 ability points, which is a better deal point-wise than some of the other parties.

2. 150 hp starbases are very tough nuts to crack up to the time of dreadnaughts. Even then they aren't bad with shield upgrades. Considering the increased cost of constructors now you -really- don't want to lose your starbases.

3. It's hard to beat +50% hps when you go on the offensive, your ships tend to survive, repair, and you therefor retain their combat bonuses as they level. You'll win more fights and tend to be stronger as you go along because your units survive better and be have better attack/defense due to their level.

4. It's great for defensive players who never even get into a fight (or at least -hope- not to get into a fight). The aggressiveness of the AI towards you is based on your military power, and that power is calculated among other things based on your ships attack, defense, and hitpoints. +50% hitpoints means you'll have a much nicer rating on the military power graph than you would with just vanilla ships, and for no additional overhead. Peace Through Superior Hitpoints. Battlehammers combined with +50% hitpoints are extremely cost effective and will really jack up your military's scare factor with the AIs.

5. No more +hitpoints from military resources. This means if you take this pick you'll have a huge advantage over an opponent that didn't. And perhaps even more important, if you don't pick it and the AI does then you'll be fighting uphill the entire time you deal with them (they'll be the ones reaping all the benefits mentioned above).

So, from an ability points view, from an offensive military view, from a defensive perspective, and in order to stay competitive with other players who might take this pick I'd say that this is one fine party. I'd definitely recommend it to any newer player, it makes the game easier in a lot of ways.

I strongly believe that the war party is the best pick on higher difficulty levels, especially masochist. If your ships cannot defeat 3 enemy ships of the same class in one turn, you will have a hard time achieving anything but a tech victory. The human advantage over the AI in tactical combat is just too good to past up. Once you have a basic fleet with Dreadnoughts, warring with the AIs is the most efficient method to stunt their development and secure your victory, regardless of which path you ultimately wish to pursue.

I second (or third) the motion that the war party is a very good choice. All parties tend to have some great features but in terms of absolute survival, War Party is best. Consider the other side of the coin. I was playing my first game on 'Normal' level (won't claim to be an expert!) and a large galaxy. Immediately I got screwed, start position way in upper left corner, approx ten good planets within 4 sectors, and the rest of the good planets in a clump near the middle. Sure enough, the Arceans (sp?) eventually rose to domination in the middle cluster, and eventually I expanded out to meet this threat. They had war party, I did not. I somehow blitzed through battleship research to arrive at dreadnaught and proceeded to take several planets from them, with a kill ratio of 1 of mine to 3 of their battleships (all they had at the moment). They sued for peace (I took many of their Trade Goods in course), then got dreadnaught tech. Now they proceeded to wipe the board of my ships, since my HP was only ~75 while theirs were 100 or 125 (can't remember, it was much greater than my dreads). Anyway long story short, if the situation had been opposite, I would have won easily. Now I have lost my entire fleet, my economy is in the toilet (b/c the Drengans, whom i had trade accounting for 1/3 of my income coming it, sued for peace w/ the Arceans and both are proceeding to attack me. Challenging to be sure, but probably unwinable. I'll have to smarten up; probably by ditching alot of unnecessary buildings.

Anyway, a vote for War party.

Go War Party if you launch a game knowing you want to start some fights. Otherwise, I'd say it's the worst party choice. Long story short, even War Party AI ships are little threat to your core empire in early phases. Your ships are inferior, but adequate. By the time their ships might be a threat, your tech advantage has you catching up is ship quality too.

Just my experience so far. Then again, I just now DL'ed 1.03. So I'll see if this has changed. ;)

Perhaps, but those objections could be applied to most of the party-orientated boosts. I think for many of them, it's simply a matter of siezing the advantage while you still have it. Choosing War Party *plus* the 50%HP pick and rush-building Tri-Strontium steel is a great way to kickoff your empire if you find yourself next to some recalcitrant neighbours... but it's next to useless if you don't get into any fights until the mid-late game. However (as I found in my last game), the fact that the military strength calculations do not currently factor in your hitpoints may actually make other empires *more* likely to declare war on you, due to their underestimation of your strength... so you may be in for a fight whether you want one or not :)

Personally, I'd be more inclined to take stacked economy or population bonuses.
