Stardock : Why do i have to pay tax?!?!?

Today my precious GalCiv-game came and there was a little note that i had to pay 22 US-dollars in tax.

Thank you stardock! Very nice of you! This must be the single most expensive "#ยค%& game i ever bought a total of 76 USdollars!!! Ok, its good but..hell i didnt even get a printed manual.

You could have written "gift" or something everybody does to stop things like this.

I'm pretty sure taxes are charged by the government and not StarDock, maybe you should complain to them :)

As much as we would like to have the power to tax, I'm afraid we don't. You'll need to take that up with the government of Sweden.

Seriously, this is a government issue, not Stardock's. You know all those nice social programs Sweden has? The money has to come from somewhere.

To suggest that Stardock should mark a commercial sale as a "gift" to keep you from paying your government's tax is irresponsible and, if they did it, would most likely constitute fraud.

Common citizens may be able to get away with the gift thing on customs forms, but businesses cannot. If a lot of companies tried that on a regular basis, then the whole Enron, Global Crossing, and Worldcom investigations combined would look like jay walking tickets compared to the international witch hunt that would follow to toughen up and enforce taxes! Trade has immense taxation potential. People find ways to cheat their internal goverment tax systems all the time, but borders can be watched more carefully than the citizens in their everyday lives. Better to make the foreigners and the people who do business with them pay, that is what I would guess is the policy.

I knew that was going to happen, that's why I didn't order the cd. I have had this when I ordered Disciples II SE from EBgames USA. The game cost met $59,95 but along came shipping costs and import taxes (thanks to the dutch government). My game ended up costing $95 in the end.

Luckily Disciples II was a great game too and I played it A LOT.

I found the option to download the game an excellent one. Although I knew I was going to miss out on the cd and case I had the game (Drengin.net) a day before the official release for a normal price, while the game still isn't available in Europe.

To sum it up, like people above said, blame it on your gorvernment and not on Stardock.

Stop insulting France, I received my game CD and it slipped under the customs office, I didn't pay any tax ! :)
In fact here I only pay taxes on foreign orders when I buy several games and total price is > 100$, never was taxed for single 40-50$ games ...

I just was extremily mad at that extra cost. I should have tried intra-EU first but i wanted the game so badly so i DL it and bought the cds.

Ah, Sweden. Now there's a country that is on the wrong side of the Laffer curve. If they would lower taxes, their tax revenue would increase. If you don't know what I'm talking about, take up an economics course.

And for the record, I'm 1/8th Swedish.

Sweden is probably the only developed country that is actively pursuing to become an underdeveloped country. Healthcare is already wrecked. You earn most money unemployed. Don't even think about starting your own business. Well, I think they're gonna succeed! ...Just a pity that I live there.

No France bashing, please. Their arrogance (second only to the USA) is a clear sign of the inferiority complex of a nation losing the trade/culture war over the decades. The poor French are punishing themselves enough already!

Now, me being one of those supremely arrogant Americans (who are winning the culture war and quite soundly, I may add), I will point out that long before freedom fries the French were outlawing American terms like e-mail and quarter pounder with cheese and replacing the foreign phrases with French equivelants. At least in America when we borrow a concept from another culture we try to give it a similar name to the one it came with! ;)

Personally, sweden seems like a capitalist country actively tending towards socialism, and the idiocy that comes with that.
