Alliances

Ok I've attributed me getting my but kicked to a lack of being able to form alliances. I thought it had something to do with the Alliance Tech, but the other races seem to form alliances way before they get it. I'll even make a gift out of it to the other civ's and still no option to form an alliance. What am I doing wrong here? Am I just the black sheep of the galaxy (baaaaa). As Mr. Miagi would say "one to one problem okay, six to one problem to much ask anyone."

To have an official alliance with another race, you must be in 'close' with relations to them. Not just friendly or warm. You really gotta kiss their arses for an extended amount of time to get an ally.

(Though one time I just gave a race a couple of my outer systems that were on the outskirts, and hurting my economy more than helping, to the Arceans, and their relations jumped to warm to close in one sweep.)

You really don't have to kiss ass if you don't want to, all you have to do is trade with them lots, as well as make good moral choices if they are Altarians or Torians

Races rarely will get close with you unless you are trading lots with them. I have found though that unless you are strong militarily alliances will ruin you. They will drag you into a lot of unnecassary wars that will likely involve the loss of a lot a trade.
I establish at least one trade route with every civilization (unless they really hate me) and boost them big with starbases. This will keep most civilizations happy with you. If they get in trouble I give them ships. I have had the entire galaxy at war except me because I was the only source of trade for every race, and their only source of surplus ships. IMO alliance is only good if you plan on destroying all other races. If you are going tech, or cultural it is just to much trouble.
