alliance bug?

Ok, well I lost again. This time because of alliance crap. This is the second game in a row that this happened. Long story short, I was at war with the yor. The arceans allied with the yor against me. This brought the torians into the war. So I was fighting three races. No big deal I guess. I tried to ally with the last race, the altarians. They were close to me so they allied right up. Two turns go by, and I get a message from the altarians saying that their at war with me because they just allied with the arceans. WTF? I thought he was supposed to be at war with the arceans. Twice tyhis has happened to me. I'm pretty sure it's a bug.

One more thing. My economy apparently halted. I was spending 316 on military, 14 on research, and 3 on social. My sliders were 35% 25% and 40%. Why was the military getting so much?

Alliances mean nothing if things go south in the deal. Be careful what your reputation brings you. Otherwise, you're going to pay for it in enemies who act like friends. One thing I love about this little game is that it treats players like players used to treat AIs. It's brilliant.

uh, no. I play good alignment, always give them tech gifts. So them treating me like I treat them is out.

I believe (although I can never remember this right, so someone correct me if I'm wrong), that maintenance on military vessels falls under the "Military" expenditure listing, which would explain that seemingly disproportionate expense.

It might be a bug, or (occam's razor) you might have been betrayed. This is the most... human... AI I've ever played against, and I really wouldn't put it past it to backstab a player like that.

That makes sense. I had a ton of ships to keep everyone at bay. The alliance thing is really starting to tick me off tho. They never seem to backstab eachother, and My allies never come into a war with me. Ah well, Time to go play me vs the galaxy again :)

I don't know Danny, all the game I have won are because of Alliance Victory. The one time I've had a similar thing happen as you described (where you are allied with one race that is allied with a race you are at war with), The Altarians decided to backstab their other ally and continue the war with me. I haven't had an ally yet that has broken it's agreement. Just be careful to never choose a weak ally. The Arceans were my good friend the last game I played, and I would have allied with them, if not for the war they were fighting against everyone else and losing miserably in. (I gave them so many ships and that still didn't save them)
