Ground Invasion Options

Ok, so you have these cool ground invasion options to choose from. Does anyone use them? I used 1 once (the convert the population one) because I was on an easier level with a horde of cash I couldn't spend fast enough.
I've found the options to be WAY to expensive for what they do. I mean I can see accumulating 5000BC to afford the final Terror Star upgrade...but I'm not going to accumulate 3000BC just to help bombard a planet. ESPECIALLY not if I have a big soldiering bonus...which seems to be pretty easy to get.
IMO an option that's never used is a wasted option...why bother including it, but before I suggest that it be changed I figure I'd see if maybe its just me.
So does anyone regularly use those invasion options or like me do you almost always just go for a traditional invasion.
An Aside: The blowing up the planet with bombardment options might be effective if troops were harder to come buy, but it seems to me that population is so plentiful (I spaced over 200 billion people easily last game from conquered planets) that there's never a time when softening up the planet first really matters much...human wave seems the most effective invasion strategy.
