Problems :(

1st. my english is crap ;)

when I want to start a new game and did the setup (map size, race stats etc) and the game loaded the screen stays black :(
I can only hear the musik... nothing more

I already installed the 1.01 patch, its still the same

My sys is

Win98
AMD K7 800
128 MB RAM
Elsa Erazor III Pro (TNT 2 chip)
with newest Drivers and DirectX 9
(old machine I know :notsure: )

Have you applied all updates from SDC? 1.01a.034

In the galciv-dir there is a file called debug.err, that one may give a hint to what's happening.

how can I open this .err file ? with word ?

With notepad. But you should really try to download the latest update via SDC, cause that one is more recent.

My computer is even older (but running under win2K) and version 1.00 works well...

What is your resolution ? (I think game has to run in 1024*768)

try to change the "hardware acceleration", it is known to create problems under 98...

I have no other idea yet ...

I would try it with hardware acceleration 0%, on your system.

If that does not work, I suspect disabling the movies files will. Their not really neccasary to play the game. For the most part you will just get still images in their place, for instance in the diplomacy screens. The game will take a few extra moments to load so be patient. I just renamed my Movies directory and loaded the game to make sure it worked on my system befor post this for you. It worked fine.

Rename BIK files in this directory;
by adding DISABLED_ to the front of their names:
C:\Program Files\Strategy First\Galactic Civilizations\Setup\

Rename Directory FROM:
C:\Program Files\Strategy First\Galactic Civilizations\movies\
TO:
C:\Program Files\Strategy First\Galactic Civilizations\movies DISABLED\
