+4 attack bonus in-system?

So, I was playing last night and noticed that both my ships and my enemy's got a +4 to thier attack rating when they were in a system. Move them into space and it went away. This goes for both attack and defense ships, too.

Does anyone know the cause of that? Was it some tech I researched and just kind of overlooked?

But I never built any :) I was so focused on military that my planets didnt get much more than soil enrichment/habitat improvements. Which ones are the defense improvements?

Ships in orbit get a "home court" advantage. This may be what's being displayed.

That sounds more like it, BoogieBac. Thanks. Although I must say that +4 attack seems pretty extreme. As if defensive ships didn't have it easy enough to begin with?

It's help make it so you really need to coordinate your attacks and figure out how to crack their shells... Military conquest happens often enough as it is.

That explains why a single orbiting battleaxe was screwing up my fleet of corvettes and battlecruisers last night. Funny thing was that I don't recall seeing that bonus displayed anywhere on the defending ship in question.

I think it just changes the basic numbers while it's in orbit. a +# display *would* be clearer though.

Well, yes, but I would've noticed a 5 attack Battleaxe, too. I'll have to doublecheck it now.

Yeah, it direct changes the basic stats, no +#.

And for that matter, if your opponent has BattleAxes, I wouldn't suggest going to war until you have at least Frigates. In my experience nothing short of them is cost-effective to take on BattleAxes.
