Oh, what the hell is this??

So i was playing a non-campaign game on a huge map, with full opponents on gifted.
Bribing the willing and avoiding the angry.
Luckily, I had a nice private starting point over by the right corner, with some very very nice starsystems tight and cozy, with some distance from the rest of the universe. I wasnt bothering anyone. I was fast and generous. I had to.
Im not one to play with maxed opponents on gifted and survive to the end.

But this time, I would!
After some hours, god knows how many, I had myself a steady empire and found myself in the top ranks.
Several upon several wars had been fought between most races, except me, and yet every race remained in the game still. Some would even put a cockroach to shame.

Things were doing great, and when I mustered out my first superheavy custom capitalship, I finally felt at ease. I now had the greatest weapon in the universe. A titanic creation that would lay down the law.

Anyway, I started to pump out military forces to reinforce my borderguards and to ensamble a big invasion force for future purposes.
My economy was great, my military was rocksteady.
I felt like Alexander the Great.

Then all of a sudden, out of the blue!, a message showed;
"The Jagged Knife has come. They have taken 61 planets from various races. 14 of those are yours."

I was like "What the.. Who?", so I checked it out.
And WHAT THE HELL?!?!?
They took ALL my key planets!! And since I build every Trade Resource, galactic projects and other one-time-i-build-you-cant-buildings I can on the same freaking planet, that is not a nice thing at all.

Im left with second rate planets and freaking culture-rejects! My safe startingpoint is completely taken by these jagged knife people, save for the capital planet!

Who are these guys?
I spoke to them and their greeting was that they aimed to please me! What the ****, man?! They just stole my entire economical and financial power! Just like that!

And 61 planets?!? Thats almost TWICE the size of the biggest race in the game!
What the hell were my espionage agency doing?

Well, obviously you can tell im upset. I am not amused at all.
I cant really see how this improves the game. When I finally - FINALLY - could hold my own and project my power, amongst 9 gifted opponents, i get this... aaaallll the way up my ***.

I dont mind having this kind of events. But 61 planets? And why have them claim all of my best planets? I mean ONLY the best. Oh, Im not kidding. Top 14.
I mean.. "Oh, thats great job, son. Youve done very well. Here, suck on this!"

Whats the strategy-value in this, if I cant predict it? And Im not talking about some flowerpower-headed roleplay value here about whats really going on down on the planets.. you know, fuck that. They were 100% approval planets, most of them.

So.. how do I fix this, ladies and gentlemen?
Whats the deal with these Jagged Knife? Are they staying until someone kills them?
Is there a way to hack the savegame to give me back my planets? Or some other cheat?
Because I do not agree at all with this shit.

Thank you.

Obviously, I meant to type military power somewhere up there.

In the future, just disable mega-events in game setup and you won't see it, or any other extreme events. For your current game, exit then reload from a previous save before the event.

The Jagged Knife has received complaints before. Some of the events are just lame and not fun in my opinion. I don't know why there has to be so many that have a negative effect for the human player. Why not have more that have a benefit for the player? Those are fun and I almost never see them anymore.

I've seen that event and it is FUCKING GAY! Some of the events are good and some are horrible. I bet whoever wrote the mega events is bipolar, damn them. What shits...

Mega events were made for the vets of DL in mind who so good that they needed something extreme to serve as a chanlenge. The average player shouldn't be playing with them unless they want some pain, something that you got with the Jagged Knife mega-event.

In case you haven't noticed, some players on these boards have a list of medals, showing their rank and history in metaverse. One of them shows the difficulty of the maps they have beaten. For many players, it shows that they've played very hard maps where the AIs got significant bonuses beyond what the player got.

I love that event! It completely ruins what I've been planning!

I actually do like it.

The who point of the mega events is to shake up the game.
Yeah I've learned to play without mega events and without minor races (the Jagged Knife is a minor race, right?) because a few of my games have already been completely ruined like that. As has been said, I understand that experienced players need that stuff for a good challenge, but I find them extremely annoying.

I was just playing a real nice game where I was isolated and building a good navy and things were going great, but then I hit the turn button and the "peace keepers" showed up and destroyed every ship outside my space, including freighters. So now I'm going to have to start another game because I like having income, as well as being able to fight wars.

I dunno I just find those events really REALLY lame because they've ruined too many of my games. Now I know to just turn them off.

Um, do you not save? I hate the events in an in-game way, but I love them really. But if you are really annoyed about it, why don't you reload from a prior point?
That event really does suck. It has no point/ If you are going to make a mega-event, don't make ones like these. Really. They're just a pain and the back and they just make me load my auto save 2 turns back.

It's not like the Jagged Knife does anything after they get the planets. Make more unique mega events. Like space monsters, not original I know. But hey, it's better than having a bunch of wussy minors take over the galaxy in one turn right?

Load a previous save game - at least in the version I have played the mega events are scrambled and the odds of a second jagged knife is very low!
(Assuming you are Danish: held og lykke, det virkede for mig - I'm not propaganding the use of foreign language, but when as discrete as this I have a hope of forgiveness)

I've seen that event and it is FUCKING GAY! Some of the events are good and some are horrible. I bet whoever wrote the mega events is bipolar, damn them. What shits...

You can switch of mega events - you sorrows are over or load as above

I actually like the Jagged Knife Event, especially on the higher difficulty settings. It gives me a foothold on increasing my military without waging war on any other Civ except the Jagged Knife.

You DO keep your main fleets and billions upon billions of standing troops off-planet, right? The Jagged Knife allows you to easily retake your own planets assuming you have a ready supply of troops (and you should), then go on to take a good chunk of everyone else's planets without war.
I also go like "aww not again..." whenever the Jagged Knife hits home but it's not because the game is ruined for me but for the fact that mopping up the aftermath of the event can get somewhat tedious, especially with abundant habitable planets/systems. Thing is you have to lead kind of a civil war to win back the colonies you just lost which isn't that hard considering you keep all of your ships.

Just focus your economy on cranking out Invasion transports and recapture your own colonies and, as Roxlimn pointed out, get all those juicy tempting colonies other races lost which you always drooled over but never dared to attack. They are now here for the taking without you risking good diplomatic relations with the other races.

Just don't sit by idly for too long; last time I got that event, the Jagged Knife wouldn't do anything for about a year and then started to build their own ships and eventually behave like another race.
Yes, barring loading up an Autosave, the best way to get out of this mess is to start dropping Transports and reclaiming your worlds. Once you get the key worlds back branch out and take some planets that were previously owned by other races. Then go back to your own and take everything back.

The key to success is speed. Strike swiftly and take back your planets (and more) before the Jagged Knife builds up and/or the other civs start taking back worlds. Just dig in and you'll come out ahead.

Andreashanson:

If you havent done so already, during your game go to options and adjust your autosave to do so every 2 or 3 turns. You'll thank me laters.

And, I think it was done in reply #2, but I'll add it again here. You need the obligatory "Turn off mega events". Thats standard for any reply where something bad happens because of them.

Also, on a side note, I remember reading a while back that mega events and "whatever the other event thing is called", seem to be linked to your play style. Some people never get pirates or jagged knife, while others never get economic prosperity or something else. So when Craig mentioned he never sees them anymore, it might be because he has refined/changed his game and how he plays now no longer "triggers" it. I seem to notice the same story everytime revolving around Jagged Knife. It always starts out with "so I was quietly sitting back building my quiet little empire off in my corner", followed by "after years of just getting by I built the ultimate ship!". Next comes "just as I was about to attack someone and win the game...", and finally... " F*** YOU, JAGGED KNIFE!"
Well I can't just reload the game from before because my autosave is set for every turn. The reason is that sometimes my computer gets really moody and decides to crash a game - any game - a lot. Other times though I can play for hours and be fine. I just started another game anyways so its no biggie.

Okay, the event annoys the hell out of me, but not in a bad way. It's a mega event. Some are good, some are bad. It's the risk you take when you play with them engaged. (And no, I'm not one of those people that always played DL on Insane and needed the challenge.) The only real problem I have with the even is the above. If they have that many freaking planets, build ships and cause troubles...they should just be a major race and be done with it. I understand that they're not anarchists and probably wouldn't be in the United Planets, but other than that, they should just be a major race with the rights and privileges there-of.

Not sure how the race is treated in terms of game play, but it might take them a while to get going because the planets they steal might be money sinks, etc. They probably dont have the same racial bonuses to economics, morale, etc. They might not even start out with 5000 BC like the other races do. So, yeah, they steal a lot of big industrial planets, but if they dont have the cash to support them, they have to fix the problem first. Would be interesting to know.

Personally I like the Jagged Knife. Its fun to be kept on your toes.

If you don't want your game thrown out of whack randomly, you can always turn mega events off.

Turn mega events off? Not good enough. We need more options.

1. Button that turns off unfun mega events.

2. Button that configures the list of unfun mega events.

or, more simply,

3. On/off buttons for all of the mega events.

Jagged Knife is a good thing. Yes, a portion of your planets belong to Jagged Knife and you have to fight to get them back. But a portion of your opponents planets belong to Jagged Knife too. And you don't have to engage in wars to get them with each of your opponents... just the Jagged Knife. Spam the universe with transports and take back more than what was yours to begin with.

Personally, I love the Jagged Knife. And yes, I think that I see it happen more to me when I'm playing a conservative, turtling game. I agree with Piznit's sidenote.

You think you had it bad i just got out of a game where i had a nice place in the left lower corner in the map.

Having my outer worlds basicly serve as canon fodder and my inner (prime) worlds serve as the economy's backbone and militairy production i was busy fighting my second war basicly over two systems that i wanted to secure my defence ring.

Then the jagged knife appeared with 37 planets of which 27 were mine seriously 27...(seems a bit overkill) and guess what :P Yay! my entire militairy infrastructure and economic backbone gone... losing the war over the 2 systems and losing my an additinal seven systems which were basicly supporting my war effort on those systems.

Finally stopping my enemy in his tracks by using the only two real production planets i had left building up a defence. i was starting the proces of retaking my prime planets. i had everything in place to start the assault to recapture my initial 10 production worlds and building from those to retake the other 17 followed by the 7 other systems i lost and the 2 that i wanted...

two AI races decided in their infinite wisdom to start their assault on the other side of my defence ring which was severly weakend due to the operation to retake my worlds they struck right after the operation was launched. And that was about it. capturing two planets that were able to produce battleships within reasonable time i could hold off my enemies for about a year but losing more and more ground to finaly having only my home system left and my defences severly weakend by a three front war which had allready lead to a 4 front war.

My god was i stupid to not turn off the mega events altough it was fun to really lose like this and seeing how long my defence ring could hold on with almost no support. i learned a lot about defensive combat.

What suprised me was the amount of planets the jagged knife actually initially got :P

Did you check your PreviousAutoSave to see if it was before the JaggedKnife event?

Thanks

I've seen it only once. That may be a valid point regarding play style. I spend most of the game at war with most of the races, more so than earlier games.

I second this! I don't understand why we can't spy on all the minors, actually, but especially the Jagged Knife since they become the largest and most advanced civilization when they appear.
