4C Bugs - Ship editor 1 Crash, 1 Question, and 1 Comment.

Hi All -

Again - if this is a repeated post, my apologies.

I tend to start more games than I finish or conclude. This gives me a chance to understand the variables, which alien tech to trade for, and of course to design new ships.

When I start a new game, and as tech develops, old ship designs show up as being available. Nice feature from the original game. When my designs show up, some of the jewelry or weapon/addition boxes appear as empty. If I see this - I know I will crash the game.

I can remove these boxes. I can save the model. Any attempt to add anything will then crash the entire game. The way around it is that I delete the model, and the game continues. An annoying bug, because some of my custom ships I'd like to reuse.

Second - and this may not be a bug:

When I set my races to random, many of my 'custom races' appear as opponents. Was this intentional? If so, there should be a way or option to leave custom races out of the mix. Just a thought.

Lastly a comment.

In the upgrade comments, apparently the independent races will do more now than just spam constructors. So far, nothing has happened, and very few ever build colonies. They still spam constructors. Here's my thought: ramp up the colonization efforts, and make ships and bases of smaller races tradeable.

As for the first but you report, it is a long standing and often reported bug that seemend to have been fixed a beta or two back, but that has now reappeared in this Beta.

Minors still are not allowed to colonize. However, they do seem to be much more competent in some areas... they'll make good use of warships, and seem to be building and researching fairly decently.

My only complaints:
1) Either give them influence, or stop them from even considering influence starbases!
2) Let the play spy on them, there's no reason to put that restriction on his spies. Spying is the best way to find out the layout of enemy planets, and sometimes minor races can get powerful enough that I'd like to shut down their production or research.

You know what I'd really like to see is some sort of "join your race" kind of event that is somehow achievable through diplomacy.

Basically, that you convince them as a minor race to join your empire. This would give a viable alternative to just conquering them.

And I like the idea of independants having Influence. But if so, they should be able to be flipped via influence as well. This would encourage them to put those influence starbases around their home planet, in order to insulate it from the dominating effects of other major races.

I'm seeing the same crashing behavior, unfortunately. I just the troop module, and its box is blank. If I click the "modules" tab in the ship builder, the game crashes. It's entirely repeatable. In my case, it sounds like the bug is more serious - you can't use your old custom designs, but I can't add modules to ANY design. That's going to make continuing this game a bit difficult. Hopefully it doesn't happen with weapons, armor, or engines!

I've been noticing other graphics not appearing, too, in this beta and prior betas, but this is the first time it's induced a crash for me.

Minors don't colonize? Not so... have seen it several times in the 4c mod.

As for the crash with the ship editor... flaming hockey-pucks! very annoying.

I was incorrect - the missing graphics do change on a per-load basis. For some reason, I had the same missing graphic for three consecutive loads of a savegame, but when I went back to it an hour or so later, the troop mod graphic was back. I kept playing until I found another missing graphic that crashed the game, though. Very annoying indeed!

End of quote

As the game currently stands, Minors only colonize when another race trades them a colony ship or a whole colony. It doesn't happen very often, but every once in a while a computer AI will trade for one of these.

Interesting... I had not thought they might have traded for colony ships. I find early on that they are extremely high trade value. Nice to know - thanks.
