Treaties?

I really don't understand the DA process for negotiating treaties with the AI's. When I open the Relations screen and click on an AI, sometimes my screen shows Research Treaty or Economic Treaty, one or the other, sometimes both, sometimes on my side, sometimes on the AI side, with no apparent rhyme or reason. I've checked to see if my relations with a given AI have anything to do with it and found that it seems to be just as random even if I have a warm or close relationship with the AI, or even if I have already another treaty with that AI. In yesterday's game, I negotiated two treaties as the game went on. Then I went through the diplomatic techs all the way to Total Majesty and still couldn't get an opening for some more treaties I wanted to negotiate. I don't mean I was turned down, I couldn't even offer to make the treaties I wanted because the screen didn't have the treaties listed as assets for either me or the AI, one or the other, again with no apparent reason or system. So it wasn't that I didn't have the diplomatic tech and skill to make a treaty, and it wasn't that I didn't have a good enough relationship with the AI. So what gives? It's hard to believe that the game makes the ability to make a treaty completely random. Can someone help me out here?

Thanks for your replies.

A race can only have 1 outgoing research and 1 outgoing economic treaty. They can have unlimited (ok, limit for # of races in the game...) incoming treaties.

Relations and diplomacy have niothing to do with the availablility of treaties. Diplomacy can have an effect on what you have to give to the AI to get one. As Loupdinour stated, each race can only have one of each to give. If you dont see one listed for and AI it merans that it was alreday given to another AI. In the Foreign Relations screen, look at the tab for "treaties" (i think thats what it says, like the third one over) and you can see purple and green lines which show where all the current treaties are being given and recieved.

When a war breaks out, the treaties are cnceled, i do not know if they are ever available again. I'd swear when i was playing as the Drath i had 2 AI's go to war and their treaties were listed again. I want sure if that was just becausei made them go to war or not.

treaties become available again when:
The two civilisations that have a treaty with eachother go to war. All treaties between them are cancelled and can be purchased by a third civilisation.

If the receiving civilisation is destroyed/surrenders, the civilisation that had an outgoing treaty towards them can make a new treaty with someone else.

Otherwise, treaties tend to be eternal.

Ok, so your are limited to two outgoing treaties...that's the answer to the mystery. Thanks so much.

Your reputation with other empires also takes a hit if you declare war on someone you have either a research or economic treaty with.

Thats true, but only for your outgoing treaties. If you only get a treaty from someone, you can declare war on them without problem.

For a time i was not getting treaties from minors cause i thought i wouldnt be abalt to attack them later. Now i get them all.

Very useful to know CaptainYar. I just assumed it would be a big reputation hit for breaking treaties either way. Thanks.

This is useful for sowing discord among the AIs, as they don't seem to take treaties into account when setting the price for declaring war. Bribe the Terrans into attacking whoever they gave their treaties to and it will reduce how much their diplo bonus can hurt you. Occasionally I've resorted to trickery to make them declare war on ME to accomplish this.

A word on alliances (it's a treaty, too): 1) alliances are available only if both you and the other race have researched alliances, and 2) alliances are only available with other races that share your same alignment. Otherwise, there is no limit to the number of alliances you may have.

Not true. You CAN ally with a race who doesn't share your alignment; you just need to have more factors in your favor than otherwise.

You sure about this? I could swear that it worked in either direction...

I believe that you also must have a "close" relationship in addition to both having the alliance tech. Also if your AI doesn't have Alliance, you can donate it to them.

I can't remember... but i think that you CAN get alliaces with races with a different allignment than yours. It will just be harder to get them you be close with you. I'm sure I've had alliances with both neutral and good civs in the past, not sure about evil though...

I'm pretty sure, i do remember asking that question on these forums some time ago. But i guess it would be better if someone else confirmed. I do know for a fact that when i attack a minor who has given me a treaty, i don't get any sort of message saying that my diplomacy has suffered.

Its easy enough to test, jut declare war on someone who has given you a treaty, both major and minor races, and see what happens. Then give one away to someone and declare war on them. THEN reload without saving cause you've just made a mess of things.

But a few games i think i lost out on some treaties cause i knew id be attacking the minors and avoided them.

It's true that research and economic treaties are one directional and the diplo hit only occurs if you attack someone you are sending a treaty to. (IE the arrow points away from you and toward the other race). I commonly get all the research treaties pointing my way (and incidentally it's kinda pretty having 9 purple arrows pointing toward my logo). I have never had any message stating I'm breaking a treaty by attacking someone who is sending me research. I have however had a message to the effect of "you broke a treaty and your diplomacy will drop" when I mistakenly attacked someone with whom I had sent an economic treaty (and receiving one from that race as well).
