TA Suggestion - New Mega Event

Like many here, I find the Jagged Knife mega event to be a boon at best, annoying at worst. Most of the time, it allows one to take worlds from factions you don't want to war with. Even if most of the worlds taken are yours, you can usually retake them back in short order. Even in the worst case scenario where the Jagged Knife become a threat, they can usually be beaten back given enough time. Worse, the AI factions don't react to losing their planets to what amounts to insurgency in a realistic way. They treat them like a whole new faction that colonized a new planet. To sum it up, the Jagged Knife are essentially a minor race with a lot more planets.

What I propose is that the Jagged Knife event be converted into something a little more interesting. Instead of an insurgency, how about a coalition? Have all the minor races in a game team up to form a new Major race (Independent League maybe?) and give them all the best tech lines of the major factions. This would give them a pretty powerful setup and would be a true mega event. The fact that minor races tend to cluster together would also work for them. It would also allow the IL to use spies, be spied on, and vote in the UN, which could be a problem if that has to be recoded.

Too bad that it's probably too late in the beta for this idea to be seriously contemplated. :/

The idea sound great, but about how the A.I does not to seem to react when ther planets are taken is not true I seen most of the A.I declare war and take their planets.

The idea of such a coalition is great. It's completely logical and interesting as a game mechanic.

Agreed - Knife/I-League/Fundies should definitely act as majors. If an insurgency or alliance can become that powerful they should use major AI, exert influence and apply to be UP members (that would be cool to vote on too - to recognise them, or leave them as outlaws?), as well as being much smarter about tech and ships. Jagged Knife have only ever been a speedbump at worst to me - I've never permenantly lost a planet to them.

A genuine I-Leage would be fantastic for shaking up the game routine, especially if they inherited their component races' diplomatic statuses: imagine sending a small expeditionary force to quickly conquer, say, the Akilians, and suddenly having five or six angry minors all gunning for you with upgraded ships. Not to mention the economic beefiness of a major-AI race with up to eight PQ15 homeworlds, each with an economic capital - a worthy opponent indeed.

Another possibility: the much-maligned mega-pirate event could be re-tuned into a JK/Pirate hybrid. Less ridiculous ships, but they could start conquering and enslaving worlds, turning them into pirate-ship factories. Hell, even if you conquered your world back, having all your lovely buildings stripped down to make room for more slave canyons would have to hurt. Unless you're Drengin.

While we're on the subject, all minor races (regular and event-based) need their tech trees sorting out: in my current game on 4c I received a report that the LentzLandians had built an innovation complex. Not only is it weird that Terran (or Arcean, Torian, Thalan etc) specific "early wonders" can be built by another race, but frankly now that I know there's a unique building like that it gives me even more incentive to invade that juicy, undefended PQ15 world quickly and violently. A generic tree based on the DA one would do, although maybe the JK should use a more Drenginish one if they're so evil...

Tell us, honestly: does everyone at Stardock have something named after them in the game? Carinoids, LenzLandians, the Wardell system, Kohd Kritter (sp?), etc.... I know I've notice a couple others I can't remember right now  :D

The Lentzlandians are always my first target. I hate their smug bastard leader.

More seriously, I seem to get them every game, and they're only second after the Carinoids in stealing any and all starbase resources near my space.

Personally, I'd like to see a League of Non-Aligned Worlds (direct B5 reference) able to vote in the United Planets. They should get a vote, if you ask me.

I LIKE when the minors take resources, its like they're being nice and holding them for me until i can get around to gobbling them up.

Particularly endearing is their habit of going to great effort to fortify their starbases while not building a single defender on their world, just so that no race with a military doctrine that favours attacking starbases over ground invasions can swoop in while my transports chug halfway across the galaxy...

If I was a Lentzlandian starbase commander, I'd start getting distinctly nervous about all those alien constructors loitering around my starbase, like they knew something I didn't...

Edit: ...although better that than being commander of a minor race cultural starbase. That would be a depressing job.

The only problem with that I can see is the sudden inclusion of a faction that has several 16 Billion Pop worlds. Suddenly, the major factions would become minor players in a UN run by the I-League. Granted, a major faction tends to become that in most of the games I play anyway, maybe that would be what would make this a true Mega-Event?

There is something you should all consider, and that is the fact that the Minor Races all have a different AI than the Major Races, and with reason. Have you ever looked at the Influence Points of a Minor Race? Have you ever wondered WHY they have so much more influence than major races (including you)? The minor races are not engaged in influence like major races (no influence bubbles on the map), and are provided with enough influence to prevent being taken over by influence pressure. The Mega-Event you are proposing would require more re-structuring than it may look like at first glance.
