DA 1.80q.100

Who out there has the latest version of DA that is listed on SDC as 1.80q.100?

I have 1.80g, and find it to be the most stable version that I've played yet. Usually I will see Cari's posts about various DA updates and backports but I didn't notice anything this time around.

Just wondering what changes were made in this one and if I want to go ahead and update.

Uh, are you sure this isn't like the time I thought Imageshack had a link to "Fag", but it just ended up being a poorly lower-cased underlined "FAQ"?

I just checked and the latest version is still 1.80g.100, and yes, it works great. No new update yet, not that there's anything horribly in need of fixing anyway.

Mine shows up as q under SDC, but maybe it's supposed to be a g. Checking for new updates doesn't show up anything else, though.

Interestingly, with DA open, the window says 1.80e.

ok cool. I have the 1.8g build but since I got it from Cari's link in the Pathfinder thread instead of SDC i'm guessing that's why SDC reads mine as 1.80e.098 even though in-game and the MV reads it as 1.80g.

and yeah, I haven't come across any issues myself. Of course, there are people who will argue how things were "better" at one time or another, but i'm more concerned on actual playability and continued stability, and this version has nailed that for me so far.

Each time I relaunch Stardock I get a ping pong effect. 108q.100 updates to 108e.98 and then I can reupdate to the q version.

according to Cari that once you update to the latest version and close SDC the older version will no longer appear. I had the same thing happen to me but I didn't downgrade to 1.80e.098. When I reopened SDC today, I no longer had the option of updating to the "old" version. This is a known bug that Cari thought was fixed, but apparently not.

so which version should I be using?

1.80g for sure. Trust me on this. It looks like a "q" but its really a "g"

I've never had any inconsistencies in the version indication. If you installed that patch before the release to SDC, that might have confused things. It's really no big deal to uninstall the DA componnet through SDC then re-install it. That would probably clear things up.

So...

Mine reads 1.80q (g, apparently, but I like the letter q better anyway) in SDC. Haven't done an MV game yet, nor even created a character, to be honest, but ingame it reads as 1.80e.

Should I do a reinstall? Not that I'm nervous about doing one, but if it's not necessary then why bother, right? What's the difference between e and g, anyway?

G fixes some pathfinding issues and a problem with submitting metaverse games after re-registering your serial numbers, and maybe a few other things.  I think that I put up a change log at http://carielf.joeuser.com which gets posted under the journals section here as well.

You can avoid a re-install by changing the version string in the registry.

First, close Stardock Central. Go to Start->Run and type in regedit.  On Vista, type it in the search box.  As soon as the registry opens, click on the My Computer icon and choose File->Export to backup the registry.

The install info for GalCiv2 is under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, in the path Software\Stardock\Drengin.net\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar.

Just change the version string to 1.7 and SDC will show an update to 1.80g.

Befiore installing the update, go to Tools->Settings and click on Internet.  US-1 is usually the best choice for servers because sometimes we have sync errors with US-2.  Click Refresh XML Data.  Also, if you have the setting turned off to check for updates to Stardock Central, turn it back on and then re-start Stardock Central.  If Stardock Central finds an update, let it update then restart SDC when prompted.

If the above method doesn't work for you, you should probably e-mail [email protected] as you may be having a more general issue with downloading from our servers.

Worked, thanks. Reads 1.80g ingame now, as well as in SDC (though I maintain it looks more like a q).

I just upgraded to DA today and had the same problem. For me in SDC it said 1.80g but in game it was still at 1.80e. The reg fix worked but I wonder if its a problem with SDC.

What the heck? I have to now mess with my registry to get the game updated correctly? What is a "version string"? I finally figured out that my pathfinding issues with regard to not having a fleet be assigned a destination has to do with the version continuing to read as 1.80e. Now to get it to the "q" version, you're saying that I have to alter the registry of my machine, something I've never done. I am infinitely uncomfortable in doing this registry fix.

You guys really need to fix this at the level of SDC, not my messing with my computer registry.

Or just reinstall DA.

This could be a bug with SDC or the patch. I bought DA with just the digital download and even reinstalled thinking this could be the problem but it still happened, like I said the reg fix worked but something is up with the installation of the final 1.80g.

Of course I'm using a wireless connection so that could also be the reason.

Kryo: I already reinstalled DA. I uninstalled it, and reinstalled it via a fresh download from SDC. Still reads as version 1.8e.

Sorry for the surly tone, but I'm just frustrated. I Is this a problem inherent to Vista? Should I just get your tweak vista utility to fix problems like this?

For me this is with XP so I don't think its just related to Vista.

I'm also not to good with the registry but I took my chance and everything worked, hopefully the problem will be fixed soon.

Ok, I took the plunge and messed withthe registry, and fixed the problem. It now reads 1.80g. I haven't played yet to see if the pathfinding problem is fixed, but I assume it is.

Thanks Kryo for your prompt attention, even if I was rude.

I'm still on 1.5.

come out already TA!!!!

I am having the same problem with the e/g version. If I do this, will it fix my TA that no longer runs after I updated to the latest version?

And as for messing with the registry to get this to work, I expect much better from Stardock.

Kurt, I only offered the option to change your registry as an option to avoid having to re-install Dark Avatar.

If you haven't e-mailed your debug.err to [email protected], you should do it now so that we can take a look at it and see if we can tell why you can't run now.

If you don't want to change the values in the registry, un-install Dark Avatar and then follow the rest of the instructions that come after the instructions on how to edit the registry.
