Range vs. space sensor?

Hi, I'm new to GalCiv2. I've wanted to build a custom sentry ship, but I don't know the difference between Range and Space Sensor (or whatever it was called... maybe it was slightly different)... I've read the wiki and the manual but I can't find what do they really change and how they are different.

Range is how far a ship can go from a friendly planet or starbase. Sensors is sensor range.
