In battles, I haven't seen evidence that DA gives a 25% bonus to ships in orbit...I haven't been surprised by losing a battle to a weaker ship in orbit...and I don't see that in the DA manual. I plan to experiment a little with this in my next game. I plan to ask about this in the DA forum.
End of quote

There's something odd I've noticed with this. You do get the extra 25% military rating with ships in orbit, however, they don't seem to fair 25% better in battle. In any case, it works in my favor since I'm always the one killing ships in orbit, not the other way around. I don't defend my planets. You may lose a few, but putting those ships on offense will usually turn it around your way.

Wonderful info and advice, M. Thanks as always.

well, you'd still have to have pretty strong ships to really start seeing the numbers add up. The AI with a 3 missile isn't going to be really helped by the 25% orbital bonus, nor is the player. At 100 missile that extra 25 may make a difference however.

Another thing to factor in is the attack/defense rolls. Even at unseemly number like 1000 attack, the rolls are still from 0-max. It is theoretically possible that a tiny ship with 1 attack could theoretically take out a big gunned capital ship if all the rolls went the right way. Also, many players have the Luck ability which in DA changes the base roll of the attack from 25% (or 50%) of the max value instead of 0 (making your ships consistently powerful).

These are all factors that go into the battles.

You get more points from a small hull with a single point of beam attack than you do from a cargo hull with the same single point of beam attack. But you get far more points for a cargo hull with 10 phasors on it than you get from a small hull with 2 phasors on it.
End of quote

Hmm. Why not use missile weapons with cargos, then, if we're just trying to boost the attack power? As you know, a 2pt missile weapon is accessible very early in the game, without much investment in research. It would not be necessary to continue along the missile tech line, and probably better not to, since they'll be developing ECM as soon as they see your missiles.

Threads like this should probably be in the Strategy section where everyone can benefit, but hey, maybe we'll attract some people to the league this way, heh.

you're correct about one thing Ghostwes; one only need to peruse the other Round threads to see the veritable fountain of knowledge contained therein. I like to think that it is easily proven that playing in the MVL will help improve one's game.

and oh yeah...Yay Giants! (it may not have been my Colts, but it was still a Manning)

Hi!
Couldn't beat ya I.B. but a tie is good enough.

Official...that word brings thoughts of Blades of Glory to mind. If your a Will Ferrell fan, you'll get the joke.

Heres my (official) entry for round 6!

Hmm, I might have to join in next round. I decided to try a game on these settings, and pulled out my first Painful Victory ever! (After struggling with Tough games, too. Pulling out a Painful Victory in 2 years and a Tough one in 1, I'm feeling pretty good). This league definitely seems fun enough for me to try.

Actually it's not too late to join in for this round. I haven't seen Neilo (the commissioner) in a bit but FireBender (vice commish) is capable of making a team assignment, plus if you have a game that's ready to go then you're all set anyway. Even if you wished to improve the game there are still another 14 days left in the round in which to do it.

All you need to do is to ask in any of the MVL threads. One thing that new people sometimes mess up on is that you're free to post as many games to the Metaverse as you wish before deciding which to submit to the league but once you post a game to this thread it's final. :) In any case whether you want to start now or next round is totally up to you.

And once assigned, you'll have a private forum at the Core ( www.thegalacticcore.com)

Alright, if I can still get in on this round, I might as well join up. I'll probably try to get in another game to see if there's any improvement, but I've got plenty of time for that.

Actually. VegJed, why don't you take my spot in team B for this round, since it looks like I will be too busy to get a game in this round. I will be back for the following round, hopefully.

Neilo isn't around to approve this, unfortunately, but it seems straightforward enough that I don't think he will mind.

Welcome to the MVL VegJed!!

lol..i edited much of this post...Ghost types faster than i do! ;) Sorry to hear you cannot play this round mate...hope to have you back in the league soon.

I have no issue with VegJed replacing Ghost, as long as everyone else is ok with it, all is well.

Again welcome aboard Vegjed, glad to have you in the league. Remember to check out some of our other threads to make sure you are up to speed. :)

As the captain of team b, I am happy to welcome a new player. Sorry to see you miss out on this round, Ghost, but I understand being too busy with RL; I was afraid that was going to happen to me this round, as well.

Seems official at this point.

One question, VegJed, is Pater Peccavi going to be your Metaverse League character?

Also each team has a private forum at the Core that requires a password that your captain will give to you but you do need to be registered at the Core first before it can work. There is also a common forum for the entire league, we've held a few votes there but otherwise the common area doesn't get too much action. You can take a look at the area without registering although you do need to register to be able to post anywhere as well as to have access to the teams private area. Anyway the league's common area is Galciv II Metaverse Leagues Subforums.

To register at the Core simply goto The Galactic Core and register. All you need is an email address but we do require the membership request to be validated by an admin, simply to cut down on spam bots. It usually takes maybe a day to get validated. Also it's nice if you use the same username there as you do here to avoid confusion.

Evil Buggers will probably be my MVL character, since I tend to do smallish maps for fun anyways, it'll avoid any potential confusion. I've got some free time coming up, so I'll be able to get in a couple games for Evil Buggers before the deadline.

I want to remind folks about the ongoing vote concerning the surrender setting for DA, MVL DA Surrender Setting Vote. So far we've had 15 people vote which isn't too bad but hopefully a few more folks can share their opinion. In this case the vote is running 9 to 5 which is the same results we had in the tiebreak criteria vote but I'm a little bit more concerned about this vote.

My concern comes from my very strong attempt to achieve a 0 year win in DL to match all those 0 year wins that were posted using DA. The best I could do was a 1 year victory by April of year 1. Also the kind of score achievable in DL was probably about 10K versus the 15K and above that was achieved for DA.

It's not so much the relative scores, since I do believe that in general DA scores a bit higher than DL, but the most common reason in the vote for prefering DA surrenders always enabled was to keep a correspondence between DL and DA. I think that this correspondence is a fallacy. I also feel that there was more "strength" of preference exhibited by those that wanted this to be determined randomly versus those that say it should always be enabled.

I'm certainly not saying that we should overturn the decision of a clear majority because of a few "feelings" on my part, but I would like to discuss this a bit more because I feel that this surrender function is what allowed all these 0 year DA wins that are essentially impossible to achieve in DL.
