Show off your ship designs 2008!

I designed a ship in my current sandbox game, which is the first ship I'd like to post on the forums. It's the first ship I've designed to look completely unrelated to it's base hull. It does not use KHSM(making it fully metaverse-legal), and in fact uses only 5 extras. It's a Terran medium hull which represents what I imagine us humans to actually make space warships look like when we eventually have to militarize space(against aliens or against ourselves) - water-based ships. Although I actually expect humans to make space warships which resemble submarines, I couldn't put together a decent looking submarine design, so I made the medium hull 'Katana-Class' hunter-killer surveyor instead.

Of course, the ship was designed in 2008, so I'm not going to put it in last year's thread. Feel free to put your more recent ship designs here.

It's a DA ship, which is too bad. If I had TA, with it's rotating parts, the front turret could have actually been made to spin. (:(

Details: The ship design isn't a warship of the line. No, that role would of course be taken by huge hulls. This thing is designed to speed around killing freighters, constructors, starbases, transports, small fighters, flagships, etc. in times of war. Of course, everyone in my present game(at the time when the design was created) was either allied to me, part of my empire(culturally conquered), or allied to me and undergoing a peaceful integration into my empire. In fact, I hadn't yet invaded any planet at all, though I had flipped about 60% of the the galaxy. So far, the Iconians, Korx, Altarians, Yor, Torians and Exploitrons have all fallen in this manner. This leaves only the Drengin and Thalan independent, protected for now by a freak 'native cultural power' event.

But every time an evil empire finally gave in to my culture, their warships would go astray as pirates, with no fleets and no bonuses supporting them. This threatened slow-moving constructors and space miners working in the region, and called for a ship to mop up the pirates. So I upgraded my aging, obsolete, neglected Terran Alliance Flagship, which had eventually given up it's survey duties to smaller, zippier ships and was lying unnoticed in the orbit of Iconia 5. These smaller ships were now outclassed by the Katana and retired to picket duties.

The ol' Flagship already had the anomaly plating, HP-booster techs, and Xinathium required to kill any pirate-ized frigate using the tie-rule exploit, and with a bit of experience and another layer of anomaly plating, it could kill off a pirate battleship using the same exploit.

It's so far done it's anti-pirate duties as expected, and though it will probably never make up for it's upgrade costs, it's already paid off several years worth of maintenance with 1000 bc and 250 bc anomalies. No ships of the Katana class were actually ever built, with only my flagship's upgrading and renaming taking place. The new name was derived from Douglas Adams' Life, The Universe and Everything:

"But while these spaceships, and other great ones come to mind, such as the Galactic Fleet Battleships-the GSS Daring, the GSS Audacity and the GSS Suicidal Insanity-are all spoken of with awe, pride, enthusiasm, affection, admiration, regret, jealousy, resentment, in fact..."

Screamer Class light frigate. (Small hull)

Designed mainly as Planetary defense craft, the Screamer(named for it's distinctive high pitched sound it makes in hover mode) is capable of reorintating its wings, in its normal position it can maintain a high forward velocity for interception and to acquire orbit. In hover mode it can assist and Ground Bombardment and Defense much like a 21st century gunship(though much, much, much bigger)

Variations include an "Atmospheric Only" Variation which removes the mobile wings and replaces the engines mounted on them with Scramjets which allow it to operate more fuel efficiant.

Since this topic is here, might as well post my most recent ships here too.
All ships belong to my custom race the Solarian Federation.
What you see are base designs btw; standard templates for all versions of that hull size.

Nothing fancy btw.

All images are thumbnails (click on them for larger versions).

JANES FIGHTING STARSHIPS
United Federation of Planets (updated)

The early Federation vessels were primarily small and constructed with exploration and diplomacy in mind.

The Orion Class system patrol vessel served as an early escort and intrasystem police vessel. Later models were fitted for deeper space exploration.

The Wasp is a two-man heavy fighter, reminiscent of a seagoing Naval aircraft known as an F4 Phantom. It has both space and atmospheric flight capabilities.

The Altair Class escort is the first true deep space vessel with capabilities as a warship. It first saw action in the disastrous First Contact campaign against the Drengin. Later refitting allowed it to continue its service as a long range surveyor.

The Miranda Class light cruiser came into service as a more advanced combatant to counter the growing Drengin threat. She continued a long traditon of faithful service well into the 24th century, seeing action against the Klingons as well. The USS Reliant is pictured here.

The Entropy Class Fast Cruiser adds increased manueverability and advanced weaponry to the basic hull design of the Miranda.

The most recognizable vessel in the Starfleet arsenal is the Constitution Class cruiser, represented here by the USS Enterprise. The most successful design in the history of Starfleet, she is the first to have separate saucer and engineering sections, connected by a small neck-like tower. She boasts both beam weaponry and torpedoes, with formidable shielding.

The Patriot Class heavy cruiser was an experimental variation; bearing a thicker, less vulnerable tower section, the engine nacelles were parallel to the engineering suprastructure. This arrangement created instability for the warp fields, and the Patriots were limited in speed. They became relegated to shorter range planetary defense roles.

The Broadsword Class battleship is the first dedicated warship to be created by Starfleet. As an answer to the dual threats posed by the Drengin and the Klingons, the Broadsword was packed with heavy weaponry and shielding. Her nacelles were encased in heavy armor plating, first used in the design of the Patriot class heavy cruiser above.

One of the most powerful designs to come out of Utopia Planitia is that of the Sovereign class dreadnought. Armed with quantum torpedoes and heavy beam weaponry, the Sovereign was indeed ruler of the battlespace. Yet heavier enemy vessels were created, necessitating desing of an even larger warship to counter the threat.

Half again as large as the Sovereigns, the most massive spacegoing vessel designed of any fleet is the Monarch class superdreadnought. Although purists decry the title, "superdreadnought" as hyperbole, these titans are truly monumental in appearance and power. The mere presence of a Monarch within 100 parsecs of their declared spatial borders was considered an act of war by the Klingons!

JANES FIGHTING STARSHIPS to be continued. Up next: special ops.

Star Trek is a popular archetype for ships, and I have to admit I have a weakness for them. Ronin’s are beautiful, as are Axel Kane’s (above). Here are a few I’ve cooked up, which blend Star Trek, Birth of the Federation, and Star Fleet Battles.

Destroyer (small hull) – basic defender

Heavy Destroyer (small hull) – fast responder

Cruiser (medium hull) – mainline warship

Battlecruiser (medium hull) – command ship (fleet bubble, fire modules)

Battlecruiser Squadron in Action

Dreadnaught (large hull) – assault ship

UFP Fleet

Although I initially ignored it, I have to admit that the ship designer is now a huge time waster. But it sure is fun!

Then it isn't a waste of time.

Great job Axel! The Wasp looks exactly like an F-4. Are you planning on a MiG-17-esque ship as a "counterpoint" to it?

How do you get pics of ships on here? I guess I'm a dumbass cuz I cant figure it out.

Anyhoo, I made the Nostromo from Alien as a freighter and wanna know what youse guys think.

not sure about every last person, but i (and most people i believe) take screen shots, upload them to imageshack (imageshack.us) and then use the image button to hotlink them. g'luck, and looking forward to seeing your design(s)!

1 of my few "useless ingame" ships.

I present to you, the Korx Launching Platform:

A problem that has plagued all spacefaring races since the dawn of space travel has been the launching of ships and supplies into orbit, though many ships can make re-entry, especially in the case of shielded vessels, its a constant problem to get them back up.  Sure you can just stick on more engines and accompaning fuel, but thats often impratical after the ship is out of orbit, and building ships in orbit has its own challenges, like getting material to oribt.

The Korx decided to take an old fasioned technique of Rocket boosters and attempt to retrofit the idea for the current technology.

The Idea is simple, the ship needing a lift is placed on the platform, (Verticaly of course) and launched. The 6 "Shuttlepods" help guide it. Once the ship is in NEO (near earth orbit) the launcher lets the ship go and, with the help of the shuttlepods is guided back to the surface where (Very) large parachutes and thrusterburns guide it back to port.

Top view: Showing the 4 stabilizing arms that lock the "Passenger" in place.

Bottom: showing the massive thruster assembly.

The "Shuttlepods" are mainly just a thruster with wings and a cockpit, serve as stabilizer and controll of the the Absolutly massive ship.  Of the 1000+ Crew that maintains the massive vehical, only 12 go in to space with the massive launcher and they controll it from these 6 Ships.  In case of emergency each one is capable of detaching from the mother craft and make reentry quite easily by themselves.

I FINALY got twilight and have remade all my main custom races designs and will now post them all for you to view (woot)

Arkarian Remote Operated Fighter

Arkarian Heavy Cruiser

Arkarian Battleship

And the updated, upgraded, slightly re-designed Flagship of the Arkarian fleet the "Aura Dragon"

You should post those to the library.

Yeah...you should post some of those to the library...that would be awesome!

I was going to say...not to sound stupid....but I will anyway so here it goes.

1. How the heck do you get the pics of the ships you design?

2. What, where why and who is KHSM?

I generally avoid on-linedom if and when I can, but this is an addiction after all. Heck, I barely even play the game.....just build ship upon ship...

OK, can take screen shots now. I'm thrilled. Now......WHERE THE HECK DO THEY GO......sorry

I dont know how to post anything to the library -_-

I fully confess using KHSM on these.  Don't plan on metaversing, so i went with what would give me the best visual results.

Following is my U.N. Spacy line of ships thus far.
