Show off your ship designs 2008!

I designed a ship in my current sandbox game, which is the first ship I'd like to post on the forums. It's the first ship I've designed to look completely unrelated to it's base hull. It does not use KHSM(making it fully metaverse-legal), and in fact uses only 5 extras. It's a Terran medium hull which represents what I imagine us humans to actually make space warships look like when we eventually have to militarize space(against aliens or against ourselves) - water-based ships. Although I actually expect humans to make space warships which resemble submarines, I couldn't put together a decent looking submarine design, so I made the medium hull 'Katana-Class' hunter-killer surveyor instead.

Of course, the ship was designed in 2008, so I'm not going to put it in last year's thread. Feel free to put your more recent ship designs here.

It's a DA ship, which is too bad. If I had TA, with it's rotating parts, the front turret could have actually been made to spin. (:(

Details: The ship design isn't a warship of the line. No, that role would of course be taken by huge hulls. This thing is designed to speed around killing freighters, constructors, starbases, transports, small fighters, flagships, etc. in times of war. Of course, everyone in my present game(at the time when the design was created) was either allied to me, part of my empire(culturally conquered), or allied to me and undergoing a peaceful integration into my empire. In fact, I hadn't yet invaded any planet at all, though I had flipped about 60% of the the galaxy. So far, the Iconians, Korx, Altarians, Yor, Torians and Exploitrons have all fallen in this manner. This leaves only the Drengin and Thalan independent, protected for now by a freak 'native cultural power' event.

But every time an evil empire finally gave in to my culture, their warships would go astray as pirates, with no fleets and no bonuses supporting them. This threatened slow-moving constructors and space miners working in the region, and called for a ship to mop up the pirates. So I upgraded my aging, obsolete, neglected Terran Alliance Flagship, which had eventually given up it's survey duties to smaller, zippier ships and was lying unnoticed in the orbit of Iconia 5. These smaller ships were now outclassed by the Katana and retired to picket duties.

The ol' Flagship already had the anomaly plating, HP-booster techs, and Xinathium required to kill any pirate-ized frigate using the tie-rule exploit, and with a bit of experience and another layer of anomaly plating, it could kill off a pirate battleship using the same exploit.

It's so far done it's anti-pirate duties as expected, and though it will probably never make up for it's upgrade costs, it's already paid off several years worth of maintenance with 1000 bc and 250 bc anomalies. No ships of the Katana class were actually ever built, with only my flagship's upgrading and renaming taking place. The new name was derived from Douglas Adams' Life, The Universe and Everything:

"But while these spaceships, and other great ones come to mind, such as the Galactic Fleet Battleships-the GSS Daring, the GSS Audacity and the GSS Suicidal Insanity-are all spoken of with awe, pride, enthusiasm, affection, admiration, regret, jealousy, resentment, in fact..."

are some of these done in TA or just DA?
they look cool.. :) though i would love to see the models use in game to see HOW it was done so i can copy :)

most of these design seem to be created in DA and perhaps a few in TA. Otherwise just experiment and you'll get a few designs that you like.

Of course you can always ask some of the folks who post here for a copy of their ships via email, or you can check the library for alot of cool player made designs.

Hope this helps

Thanks...I won't lie, there were a lot of failed attempts along the way... :NOTSURE:

I actually designed this ship in '07, but you can't see it very well in last year's pics. (It's mostly black and I took the picture in the Shipyard.) So, for your pleasure I present the Birmingham class battlecarrier!

Who're YOU callin' a backward species?!

more shots of the Birmingham to come, as well as some other treasures from '07....

Okay, new to the forums here, so bear over with me.

Do you guys use an actual shipdesign program to create some of these good looking bulks of space?

- If yes, where can I get it?

if you have the game you have the program. You can agument it with jewelry from the library. Kyro's is one of the best.

To clarify, I'm playing Galciv2: Dread Lords with no mods or anything.

So they do design their ships in-game and not in a seperate program located in the installation folder?
- So what about those "Starship Intelligence Report" screens; from the expansions?

And I can't find the function regarding Template saving a design....

And thank you :)

As far as templates: If you create an initial design, then make changes to it through the "upgrade" option in the shipyard, the program automatically saves a copy of the initial ship design under the templates folder. I think it would be better to have it as an option rather than wonder how to do it. Maybe SD will consider this?

GJO, unless I'm mistaken on this, Dread Lords doesnt give u the option to save the ship design as a template, you will need Dark Avatar to be able to save your ship design templates. It should then be saved in your windows My Documents\games\galciv2 folder. As for the actual ship design itself, the tutorial at the galciv main menu should be able to get u started. After that it all a matter of trial and error and your imagination.

GJO, All the ships are created in game in the shipyard. I personally prefer creating ships to actually playing the game, so I generally just play a "Battle of the Gods" Scenario which allows you to build & use hulls of any size right from turn 1. You don't really need any mods, though Dark Avatar does have a more extensive selection of non-functional parts, "jewelry." I recommend it for that alone. Though I don't use it, a lot of people here would also recommend Kyro's hull mod for additional unique construction features, but it's not by any means necessary to have a lot of fun with the shipyard and create some really stunning hulls.

Dread Lords has no template option which is not really that big of a deal...you can create your own "templates" (in effect) in DL simply by creating prototype version of each ship. Save it as "X-Shipname" like the US Air Force's X-plane program. I save these ships with no functional parts, i.e. no weapons, modules, defenses, engines, etc. That way, I have a "template" that I can just throw functional parts on when I play and simply rename as "Shipname Mk #." Or whatever. In Dark Avatar, this is done more or less automatically. That is all.

The Starship Intelligence Report is an in game feature added in Dark Avatar. You click on a ship on the main map and can select to view a snazzy looking Intel report on the selected vessel and it's capabilities.

Anyway, new ship, this one was a beast to build, literally.

X-KRB-0001 Cerberus
Role: Light Corvette (Prototype)

Medium Hull, DA (Metaverse-safe)

The prototype Cerberus, named for the three headed guardian dog of Hades.

I'm especially pleased with the dual in-line intakes/Bussard Ramscoops slung underneath the hull, which you can see in these shots:

And a closer look at the trinary engine stylings. After a ton of trial and error, I finally got something that looked like a wolf/dog...lemme know what you all think. I wish I could have gotten an open jaw, exposed teeth, bloody roar sort of thing going, but I just couldn't make it happen.

great ship fvc, especially like the underslung of the ship. I normally never pay attention to it when designing. Guess I should.

icete012, in case you miss it, I answered your question about importing ships from Dread Lords to Dark Avatar...the quick answer is yes see my response to your post for the details...

FVC, yeah, saw it and thnks.

below is another recent work. Somehow all my completed designs took on an insectiod or avian-like appreance....

Front and back view of my new Titanic class colony ship:

Complete with its own shopping mall!

Of course there is the mall security armed with death rays

And plenty of extra parking in the back! Plus two escape ships capable of holding .01% of the Colony Ship's total capacity. Although the escape pods can really only hold maybe 5 people each since they are being used for storage at the moment.

Some more pics (top is damaged)

Man that is huge! It must have taken forever to construct. Very nice work. You should upload it to the library :)
thnx! it did take a wee longer than i originally planned, boy did i learn to have patience! i basically gave up on adding more parts after it took 3 minutes for a new part to be added to a hard point and my memory ussage started getting passed 85% with just one ship on the screen.

My games started taking longer to load too, around 7 minutes to start if I get to the point where I can start using this particular ship template. And when I did finally get to use the ship in the game, gameplay slowed down considerably. And I learned from other forums to turn off Enhanced ship rendering just to be able to display that many components (otherwise textures get distorted and components start disappearing).

Just for reference my system specs are:

AMD dual core X2 5200+ (2.6 GHz)
Geforce 8800 Ultra (768 MB DDR3)
Corsair XMS2 Dominator 2GB PC26400 (800MHz)
Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty
WD Raptor 150BG sata Hdd

The only bottleneck I can think of is my CPU, since it is the oldest component. If anyone really wants to benchmark their system I'd be happy to upload it to the library :) it's not quite practical as a ship unless you've got a monster system or willing to turn off all the eyecandy or enable all the performance options.

Has anyone figuared out how we can get the spinning parts to work on here.

First Question is do you have the TA build if not then this does not work

ok click om the part you want to spin the click animate then click either X Y or Z

Z is what most us will use I think :NOTSURE:

then move the slider left or right to see it move,.. then save of coarse also save as templates if you want it for all games
