Turning off Tech Victory for AI in game

I'm in the middle of a Gigantic game (it's just on normal, but go easy on me, I just started). Anyway, greatly enjoying the game, not the strongest empire by any means (in fact I would probably get my butt kicked in an all out war), but I am slowly gaining power.

However just when it is getting fun, I get a notice that one of the AI is going to win a Tech Victory, I honestly thought I had turned Tech Victory off, but I guess not.

Is there anyway to edit a save game, change options or something to turn this off, I tried beating the AI to it but they had already researched Beyond Mortality by the time I realized what had happened and there was no way to catch up. Any suggestions on how to stop this so I can keep playing, being a Gigantic map, I have spent a lot of time on this one, and liked how it was shaping up, now at this point it looks like I will have to start over unless there is someway to change this. I tried using Espionage to take out Research facilities, but couldn't slow it down enough. I'm afraid this empire would annihilate me in a war so I'm not sure what to do.

Suggestions? Or am I just "sunk"?

Thanks!

It doesn't sound good for you. It isn't likely that you are going to beat the AI to the tech victory.

The only option I can think of is to declare war against them and hope that slows down their research when they turn their focus to deal with you. This doesn't always work though. If they think that they don't need to adjust their spendings to keep up with you, they might not make any changes. It is also possible that they have researched most, if not all, of the other possible researchable techs, and tech victory is about the last they can work on.

My only long term solution to this is to always keep the tech victory off. That way, you never have to worry about it.

I think one of the most fun games I had was when I had tech victory on and I had to rush ahead to destroy an opponent before he reached an imminent, and ended up just narrowly succeeding in taking him out. Of course this alot harder to do on a gigantic map as your playing. Depending on what he has on his worlds though, you could possibly catch up by grabbing his most productive research colonies.

However, it's most likely you'll lose this game, especially with the size of the map your playing on and the fact that tech seems to be faster now. I do wish you could look up what your settings are after you start a game though.

Money is everyone's friend. Try to get as many people to declare war on him and hit him with all you've got.
