Obscure bug that's been around forever?

When you research 'Mass Driver Theory', you get the crappy Space Cannon. When you research 'Missile Weapon Theory' you get the crappy Sparrow. But when you research 'Beam Weapon Theory', you get nothing, because the crappy Particle Beam is given when you research 'Space Weapons'.

This really, seriously looks like a bug, and it's been around forever. Why would you get an energy weapon anyway? I mean, Space Cannon, maybe - it's a stupid, simple technology. But an energy weapon? That's a little 'advanced' if you think about it.

Hi!
What you're describing is not a bug. If the game would freeze or crash or you wouldn't be able to move ships or put a building on a planet that'd be a bug. What it is I'd call a minor glitch. Game still works, and the gitch is gone when you invest a just a few more tech points.

Like when you used to get the free +7 beam upgrade module for starbases?

The initial beam weapon is the "inaugural" weapon... it's huge, does minimal damage and is, for all intents and purposes, a pretty picture. It's window of use is so small that it's darn near irrelevant. The next beam level cuts the size down by what, half? It's more like an insurance policy... a just in case you get jumped before you have the chance to do anything here's a bloated underpowered weapon you can get three guys to wave around...;)

I have NEVER used it. Ever. In fact, I usually don't build my first warships until I have the last tech in the first block from whatever weapon flavor of the day I choose. I can't ever remember the AI using it either. Besides, having to research planetary invasion and all that just to make it useful for anything other than annoyance really makes it a non problem...

As to being a "complicated" first weapon... we use lasers everyday. From target finding to surgery to making copies. Successful tests have demonstrated it's destructive capabilities. In space, with minimal interference and no air to interact with, a beam should/could/would be that much better. Plus, don't know about you but, the thought of "miss" projectiles flying all over the place until they find something to hit doesn't sit well. What a day it would be... traveling along nicely, heading for home on leave... until that rail gun spike fired halfway across the system finds a home in your canopy... It's all relative, and it all has pros and cons, real and unreal, plausible and not...

Please to consider it "we have to start somewhere..."

While we are on the subject of old non bugs:-

I think the image for basic lab and xeno lab should be swapped around. The basic lab looks like an upgraded xeno lab clearly these are the wrong way around?

I was not joking about the labs - has no one else noticed this in DA?

I have pre-ordered TA but I am waiting till it is released to play as I am enjoying DA. Could anyone who is playing TA tell me if buildings for labs now look correct?

I've always thought that was a little odd.

As for TA, that's a different issue entirely. Most if not all improvements have redone graphics for TA. To be perfectly honest, the labs look nothing like their DA counterparts. Well, maybe not -nothing-, but close enough.

@Uranium
Are you referring to DL, DA, or TA? In DL and DA, you get Particle Beam II for researching Beam Weapon Theory. In TA, you don't, but that may be an oversight.

I'm not sure how to respond to the idea that getting Particle Beam (I) from Space Weapons is a bug. Particle II does seem fairly useless, though, and it shouldn't be a big deal to just replace it with Particle I in its place.

However, Starship Defenses gives you Armor Plating. What would you say to that?

Hmmmm, "correct" is such a subjective word :)

If you need any more persuading about the DA lab icon progression look no further than the tech speed modifier when you setup the game! Here they seem to be in the 'correct' order.

No it's ok, I actually agree with you. But yeah, with TA the races have different biuldings so now this only affects the Terrans, I think.

I wasn't objecting either-but even the Terrans have drastically different graphics for the buildings, in TA. While the Research Lab (no longer called Basic) is IIRC moderately taller than the Xeno Lab, the Xeno Lab is, IMHO, much more impressive-as it should be.

It would be nice if that could be fixed for DA and DL, though. Seems simple enough.
