Communication without Universal Translator

Not really a bug, more of an oversight. It doesn't seem right that I can take part in the United Planets and get notices from other races that they've been paid to eliminate me, when I can't talk to anyone under any other circumstances because I haven't researched the translator yet.

I think it would be great to have the gibberish pre-translator communication screen pop up, and then just find myself under attack and have to quickly research the translator so I can ask what the bloody hell is going on.

Similarly, it seems odd that the Drengin and Korath can't talk to each other without the translator.

The way I always look at it is this: There are ways to get messages to you. For instance, alien races can use their translators to translate a message to you when it suits them, as in a declaration of war. However, they ignore your crude attempts at any formal audience since you lack the capacity to communicate in an intelligent manner in their language.

Given how races never research universal translator themselves for months... isn't it funny how even when THEY have a universal translator you still can't talk to them?

It's even funnier: they can talk and trade WITHOUT UT. When I play them, I can't. :(

This is why I will never understand why I can't ally with a comp who doesn't have the Alliances tech. I can talk to them just fine even though they don't have UT, but I can't ally with them? What the spork?

Yeah, yeah, I know; "Turn on tech trading! Blahblah." Sorry, I hate tech trading on it my games these days; it diminishes the distinctiveness between races and cheapens diplomacy ::(
