Problem starting Altarian Prophecy

Just purchased Gold II and the Altarian Prophecy expansion pack. The Gold II installs ok but when I install the expansion I first get a message that hklm/software/stardock/drengin.net/galciv cannot be found. It continues the install but when I try to click on the game icon to start I get a message that the "gcloader.exe' stopped working and windows gives me the option of seeing if there is a fix or stopping the program. Clicking on the fix search does nothing. I have Windows Vista as my operating system.

Altarian Prophecy is an expansion for the first Windows GalCiv. So you need to purchase the game on this page to be able to run it. Of course, you'll then end up with two serials for Altarian Prophecy, so it might be better to go somewhere like this page where you can possibly find Galactic Civilizations or the ultimate edition cheaper than in Stardock's online store. But, whatever you do, do not purchase a used copy - odds are someone already used the serial number, and you won't be able to activate the game.

With Gold II you mean Galactic Civilizations II: Gold Edition? Because that includes GC2:Dread Lords and its first expansion Dark Avatar. The second expansion which will be released in january is Twilight of the Arnor . As Phaedyme said, Altarian Prophecy is the only expansion for GC I. It is still a very good game but GC II is newer, has more features and gets constantly updated.

Hope that clarifies a few things.

Hi!
Try installing Stardock Central. My download-only version needs it (more specifically one DLL that installs with it) to work.

Actually, was Altarian Prophecy ever sold separately from GalCiv 1? The only copy I ever saw in stores was both installments. I know you could buy it separately online, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

Install Stardock for the DLL, and see if you can also install GalCiv 1 in addition to AP.

Well just click the link to amazon.com you provided. The fourth item is AP as a stand alone box.

Okay!

I didn't see anything after I scrolled down on one of the pages and saw GalCiv 1 available for $44.95. Mild hilarity ensued.

Thanks for the information. I have downloaded Stardock central. I guess the worse thing is that I'm out 10 bucks for an update to an older game! No biggee. The good news is that I haven't had any crashing issues with the game in Vista yet.

If you have trouble running GalCiv1/Altarian Prophecy in Vista, use Windows explorer to find the exe files and right click on them, choose properties, click on the compatibility tab, and tell it to run in Win98 compatibility mode.
