Fleet Movement

Can a fleet actually go on auto pilot

I am pretty new to the game but have noticed that I am able to travel long distances on auto pilot with single ships but fleets force me to perform one manual movement at a time this becomes agonizing later in the game. Is this true or am I doing something wrong ?

You are probably not doing anything wrong. This is a known bug in ver 1.80e.
Check out the post entitled "Fixes for Pathfinding + Metaverse 12 Error" in the Support/Bugs section. Within you will find a patch which is currently 1.80g test 3. It fixes that bug.
