Game non-responsive after attacking orbiting ship

When I a single ship (which is guarding any planet), with a single ship of my own, the game just hangs after the battle.

I continously pick of single orbiting ship with my own ships. But after I attack them (and I succeed) the game just hangs, and my ship turns to auto-pilot. Then I can't click a planet, but I can double-click it. The only "fix" so far is a quick save followed by a quickload.

Anyone else have this problem, or how I can remedy it?

I am running the latest Beta. And I ment "When I attack a single ship", not "When I a single ship" :-p.

Same thing here. I'm so glad I have a fast machine, because sometimes I've been saving+loading for every movement point of a ship doing multiple attacks.

No fix that I know of yet. Tomorrow should be another beta release and hopefully the fix is in there. I know people have sent in savegames and debug.err on this issue.

Okay, glad it's on the todo list :-)

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this bug. I've got an immense game going where the Iconians and Torians have been at war with me for almost two decades, but up until recently have only been able to perform Starbase denial attacks on each other. I finally managed to get a fully defended resource base in Iconian home world territory and managed to take their homeworld only to end up being reduced to attack/save/load.

I really want to finish this game, if only to wipe that smug smile off the ugly faces of the Torians...

I got the bug again, this time I saved, alt-tabbed to check the debug.err, alt tab back in, saved and quit the game.

I'll post some snippets of the log here:

All in all, the debug.err is 2776 lines, 1584 are "Debug Message: Out of sample handles." and 294 "Debug Message: Unallocated Mem: 8 bytes of memory from line 1130 of .\Source\editfields.cpp".

I've made a copy of the debug.err, if anyone is interested.

Thought I better add that I can do about 5-6 save&loads before the game crashes and my computer reboots. The first several times, Windows gave me a message telling me that my video drivers caused the crash and needed to be updated. I checked and lo and behold there was a new driver for my video card.

So I updated the video driver and it fixed it so that when the game crashes and my computer reboots I no longer get that message from Windows. :P

Quick edit: I'd post my own debug data but I'm running late for xmas shopping. Sorry.

I have something similar now, a Korath fleet wants to attack a planet of mine, but the game just hangs. The turn button is actually gone. I tried saving & reloading, but to no avail.

I have a debug.err and a quicksave. Let me read that other thread first lol.

I mail them the savegame and debug log.

This just sucks, updated the game (hoping this vanishing turn button bug was fixed), but it's still there. I know, it's a beta, but this game was just starting to get interesting!

I'll try another game with the latest build.

I'm uncertain as to what's causing the freeze-up. In my last game (3c Drath) I took out 2 races w/o issue. Destroyed ships in space, orbiting planets, solo, in fleets...any mix and no issue. Now I have a pirate ship I cannot destroy w/o having this freeze-up.

I'll confirm this bug as well - my post is similar if not the same bug as this poster.

I confirm this bug as well. Same as the poster. I attack anything and have to save and quit and get back in not just orbital ships. This error doesn't seem to be showing up in the debug either.

Hupsakeetje, the problem is still there, in a new game. Which sucks (again), since I don't like starting a game and then not being able to actually finish it.

Or I have to save/load every time any fleet attacks anything :(.

This bug is known for several weeks - and still not fixed.
You're not able to finish the game at the moment - maybe it's still a beta - but a useles one. Investing a lot of time but you can't finish the game
I hope the developpers will fix it soon or I get really angry about that - this is a new bug

I know what ya mean... I'm also trying out an inmense map, and just when it was getting interesting... I noticed that this started happening to me when I researched and upgraded my ships with the ultimate weapons in the tech tree, like Dooms Ray. Now everytime I attack something. The game stops, and I have to quicksave and reload... hate it. Then again this is a beta... BUT I WANT TO FINISH MY GAME!!!

I've actually finished a couple of games with this issue, once by influence and twice via conquest. Sometimes, after a load it will simply stop being an issue for awhile. It's happened to me on Medium and Small universes. It does not seem to be based on weapon tech for me, as I had only plasma in one game and disruptors in two others. I use Windows Vista 64 bit w/an 8800 GTS (340 MB), and an Athlon 64 X2 4800+. I have 4 GB of memory. One point in favor of Vista is that when the game finally crashes (after multiple save/loads as reported above), it only crashes the game, not my OS. BTW, the new racial tech trees are awsome! This is what has been missing from these games since MOO. I play w/tech trading turned off, so the only way to get some tech is through conquest or spying, and I really like the feel of that. ToA has revitalized my interest in this excellent franchise.

Yeah, I've seen this with the pirate ships too. Not always though-seems to occur randomnly after a battle. I've always been able to save the game, quit, and then reload to get rid of the problem. After doing that once, my recollection is that I do not have the bug again.

I posted too soon it seems. The game I have in which this is currently taking place is becoming non responsive after each attack on a pirate ship. In fact, the last time it happened, the game froze in mid turn in another version of the now infamous disappearing turn button. So far, I've been able to save, quit and reload the game but that is going to become old very quickly in light of the dozens of pirate ships I have to clean up before they start attacking vulnerable targets. The pirates I am encountering are those that appear after an evil empire is defeated, in this case the Yor. Pirates entering the game randomly as part of a minor event (not the major pirate event which I have not experienced in the context of this particular bug) do not seem to cause this bug when attacked. I am, by the way, using the very latest Beta.

Just to be pedantic about it, if you can save/load/etc the game isn't frozen ;)

That being said, there was a bug fixed (or perhaps multiple) in TA beta 3D regarding one type of getting stuck where the Turn button was unavailable. I haven't seen that one any more, but now I do get the above bug where the game will not let you click the Turn button even though it's visible.

I've been able to finish every game where this has happened by doing a Quick Save and then load, don't even have to quit the game or anything. It's annoying beyond belief when there's a large number of ships that you're fighting, but this is a beta after all - we're here to find these things :)

There doesn't seem to be any particular item that you attack to cause it; I've had it occur with fleets, star bases and orbiting ships. Even stranger, it can come and go during the course of a game. I've had it show up for a few turns then go away and I've had it seem to "follow" a couple of ships around. That is, some of my ships will not have any problems while others will consistently have that occur if they attack anything.

I've noticed this bug as well. I run on Windows XP 64 bit edition, and it's never hard crashed my box. But it does get annoying. I'll running around with my Archangel Class Battleship, and I try nuke a nearby Arcean fleet. Game doesn't feeze, but seems to hang. The menu system works, the scrolling sytem works, but the End Turn button is gone. The only way I've found to fix this error is to actually quit the game, reload the game fresh, and load up the game again. Oddly enough it'll usually finish the turn it was in the middle of.

Seems like the bug system is pretty robust, really. But it's annoying to have to reload the game after each turn.

What DrGuppie said :). I can't find a denominator on the why myself, so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed when I attack.

I switched off the "view AI player attack" thingie, atleast you can't get stuck on those fights anymore.
I had the bug too, and I'm getting pretty annoyed by it. Every time I attack a single ship, the game freezes. However, I noticed that fleet battles seem to be going fine, and thus came up with the following

WORKAROUND: Disable the interface option "show full fleet battles only when both sides are fleets". This way, you get fleet battles every time even if you attack a freighter, which does get tiresome, but at least the game doesn't freeze.

I still hope they manage to isolate this bug, I have the impression it "bugs" a lot of people.
Or you could just disable the battle sequences entirely. This also gets tiresome, not because you get the fleet sequence, but because you don't see laser beams ripping apart enemy ships ;).

Atleast you can finish the game :).
