Do colony defense builds use up a tile?

In another thread, there were some good replies to explain how Planetary Defense and Omega defense management work. One further question if I may, when you build these, do you have to click on a tile thus using up one of your buildable tiles and losing the production of a factory or research center on that tile? If you have a Class 7 planet would you have to give up two of the seven buildable tiles if you wanted to have the two defense systems?

Thanks for your replies.

Yes and sadly, on a PQ7 planet that you want both of those buildings, you'll only have 4 tiles left since the colony itself uses 1 tile.

Yes...a true shame. Omega Defense at least makes sense, since it seems to be some sort of ground-based anti-orbital battery. Planetary Defense, on the other hand, is supposed to be a kind of orbital defensive network of satellites and unmanned ships...so it shouldn't take up any planet space!!! *shakes fist like an old man* Unfortunately, though, it does. I guess the control nexus for the satellites and destroyers needs to be ground-based or something. Which is why I never build Planetary Defenses. Too big of a waste of space. The Omega is worth it, but usually only on a PQ20+ or some highly-strategically-significant world.

Thanks...glad I asked. Hope they do something about this in the TA game.

They won't, because that is the way it is intended to be. Those defenses take up space, in the form of a tile, that's how it's supposed to be ;).

also consider that when you achieve soil enhancement and upwards u can upgrade that pq7 to a pq9 or better so the question then becomes what is better for ur planet/empire. a well defended planet on the edge of ur empire or a highly productive planet deep in ur own territory, kind of spells out the best use of planet defense stratergies.

Still, it would be nice if defences built on eachother the way economy, research, production etc. buildings do. Like each generation of building does what the previou one did PLUS what its supposed to do, so youonly use one tile. Just saying it would be nice and maybe id build one one day.
