How to Achieve Treaties and Alliances?

Some very basic questions in this area I still have after reading avery page of the manual as updated on line. If I missed something, I apologize.

1. Economic and Research Treaties. On the Relations-Speak to screen, both the alien and I showed economic treaty as available. I proposed making the treaty by bringing down Economic Treaty on both sides, the same as trading one tech for another, got the green light and made the deal. Later, when I looked at the Trade screen, I was chagrined to only one set of arrows showing the alien was getting 10@ of mine, but no arrow coming back to me. Between two of the aliens, there were pairs of arrows showing the treaty working both ways. Can someone help me out with this?

2. Alliances. The only way I know of to speak to an alien is on the Relations-Speak to screen. I have a war going on with one alien and another alien has given me a good fleet to help me win. I'd like to make an alliance with this friendly alien. How do I do that? I have the Alliances tech, but on the Relations-Speak to screen "Alliances" does not appear anywhere. So how do I make the alliance?

3.There is a note in the manual suggesting that you pay an alien to go to war with another alien. How would you do that? I don't see anything like that in the Relations-Speak to screen and I don't know of any other way to talk to an alien. Can someone hel;p me out with this?

Many thanks for your replies.

I've wondered about those things myself, but I don't take the time to figure it all out. The only thing I do know is that in order to pay an alien to go to war war, you offer money on your side and ask them to attack the race you want them to declare war on. Increase your money until they except and presto! you've just started a war.

1 Are you sure you brought down the economic and research treaties on both sides of the trade screen? If a race already has an economic/research you won't see it on his side.
2.The other civ has to research alliances as well.So would trade or gift the civ alliances before asking.

3.Trade screen.Choose attack x civ.Give money or tech etc to get green.

1. Each Civ (including you) has 1 econ treaty, and 1 research. They can give that treaty to someone, and they receive 10% of econ or research (though I don't think the the giver loses it). Anyway, either what happened to you was a bug, you misread the 'Treaties' screen, or you didn't bring econ treaty on his side (remember, you don't need to bring it on both sides--he can give you his treaty without you giving him one. So it's not exactly a treaty)

2. Alliances show as an option on the trade screen when, a) both sides have the technology 'Alliances' and b) when the Civ has 'CLose' relations with you.(really hard to get, 'Close')

3. On the trade screen, their is an option thats says 'ATtack' click it and choose the race.

I still do NOT understand why each race onlY gets 1 research treaty and 1 economic treaty to trade with.... it should be unlimited or it should be a limit of 10 - to mirror the 10% given each time you share this 'treaty'.

I hope this changed in TA.... it's SO silly to me that I can only use my research treaty once and my economic treaty once - kinda stupid actually.

No. It makes it a valuable commodity. Whereas technology can be taught to anyone, I can't give a ship to everyone... it's a material thing.

Like the treaty.

Treaties eventually lead to Alliances, and the whole "peace with the universe" idea is about that hard, ally with two races and slaughter the rest.

It is possible to have an eco and or research treaty from all of the other races but you can only give one of each. In my current game i have an eco treaty from each of the other races and a research treaty from all but one of them. I have an alliance with all but one of the races. The higher your diplomacy and influence skills are make it easier to obtain those treaties and or alliances. Also having the ability to quickly convert from peace time to war time production will ensure that any race that starts a war with u will find themselves facing an overwhelming force of your ships and any allies.

You can trade for everybody's economic and research treaties without giving up your own, however, economic treaties are highly valued by the AI and I won't pay what it costs for one. Also, giving up your treaties can stab you in the back later in the game. The only way to get one back is if the race is destroyed. So, if you sell a major a treaty, they can benefit too greatly later for the paltry sum they gave you earlier. Minors are safe, but there's usually not much you can get from them. I just don't trade economic treaties at all. I do buy research treaties when I can get them since they're relatively cheap, but for me, the economic ones might as well not even exist.

you could just learn to speak the language and cut out the Universal Translator, you know, the middle man...
jk jk

I agree with CraigHB, I just make a run for the Reasearch treaties because in my opinion, Technology is ultimately more important than money. It is hard to stay in debt in the game unless you endeavour to do so...and reasearch could help the economy anytime
