Questio about Influence in TA

Hi, I played on Challenging/Bright and wanted to conquer my enemies with a gigantic influence. I played human with some boosted abbilities at my diplomatic and my influence skills. I build an influence starbase near the planets of an opponent but then it says "We know what you are doing" in the "stats" screen and they talked to me, saying that they are wanting me to tear the starbase down. After some more turns they declared war and were superior.
So how should I conquer someone with my influence when they declare war immediately after I start my attempt to conquer them?
Oh and maybe I should add that I was trying to conquer the Drengin.

Might makes right. You should have a big stick behind your back before you start asking whether they want fries with that. In other words, for any type of victory you should always have a military that can be brought to bare, just in case they take exception to what you're doing. Have you tried building a Spin Control Center and keeping your 10 best ships there? It does an amazing job of making you look a lot stronger than you really are.

Aye, the influence victory still has the strings attached of a conquest victory that you need a navy to keep people sedated from shooting at you.

Well what's the sence of influence then? Invading planets is never a problem for me, the problem is just to destroy the ships, which I need to destroy in all cases because if i try to conquer them with my influence they attack me and I have to defense against these ships and if I try to invade my enemy I have to shoot the ships down before I can invade the planet.

I was not playing so long that I could already build the spin control center.

Thanks for the help so far.

The advantages of trying to attempt an influence win are the increased revenues from tourism from expending both into neutral zones and AI zones, and if you have a strong military, seizing planets from the AI without a shot fired.

If you are able to seize several planets from a specific AI through the use influence
without a big ol' fashioned messy war starting up you reduce that AIs Tax income, Tourism Income, Research and Military Production ability (The latter two dependant on what the planet/s were geared for) while gaining valuable real estate which already have some thing on them and keeping your people and your navy safe.

Whenever I go for an influence victory I pick on the race with the least popular ethical stance, so say if my neighbours were the Yor, Dregien, Korx and the Humans, the human would be the target as the evil race surrounding them wouldn't care as-much if my neighbours were of Good ethical stances.

But in any game, you'll always need a strong military.

I think it makes total sense... Why would any alien race sit idle while their subjects are being seduced into rebellion by another culture?

I didn't mean that it's sensless and unlogical. I just thought it would make it impossible to win with your influence. But now I played guided by the advices and thought about it and today I won with a diplomatic win, shortly before I would have won with my influence. ^^

Yeah, I think the only way to win an infulence victory without a shot fired would be to have a huge army that's bigger than anyone else's at all times. The moment you get your Military rating down, and they'll go after you if you control the largest area. Especially if you're building infulence bases everywhere. They don't like influence bases in general, not just the ones directly over their planets.
