Ties for high score will also be limited to the 4 points. These will be broken by game speed. In the event of double ties (equal speed and score) points will be given, regardless of number. (These rules are not yet official and may be omitted from the round. It has had discussion but no closure. If there is no objection than these rules will apply for this round.)

We will use the Round 5 thread for our discussions, plus the submission's. Looking back through one thread is far easier than looking back through many threads and posts.

For any discussions on rules please post in the MVL Rulebook thread.

Also there is a discussion about our inclusion into the AltMeta here, The MVL and the AltMeta. Please watch this thread for more discussion soon.

I am really looking forward to this challenge and to the rounds ahead. Good luck to everyone and a big welcome to our new players, i hope you enjoy the league. As always i hope you enjoy your games and i hope you all have safe and happy holidays.

The Commish.

sigh... I'm quitting the MVL goodbye.

Reason? By that I mean are you skipping this round or are you not interested in playing GalCiv2 period?

Sorry to hear that Shadow. Hopefully we will see you around from time to time.

Shame though.

That is sad to hear Shadow...your avid enthusiasm for the MVL was infectious. Hope you come back at some point.

Yikes....well, Team D seems to be falling apart. PlayJeff and thebutterfly are both MIA, and Shadow is gone. All of the team-mates we started last round with are gone.

RexDaddy and GalenEvil, please show up at the core at some point and look at our team forum. We havent seen you there, and last round, working as a team was our greatest asset.

Maybe a draft after this round may be in order? Have the other teams compositions changed significantly too? I havent been watching that...

we may be forced to have one, yes. we can look at that when the time comes.

We certainly need to evalutate the situation after each round. We do have a rule in play that no round should start with any team having more than six or less than four players. Also no round should start with any team having more than one player more than any other team. While we have essentially reserved peoples places in a team for a while even if they haven't shown up in a bit, I don't think it's right to count on such a player's attendance for these team size requirements.

However, I'm not quite sure what our policy is on a complete new draft. I would think that it would be pretty much required if the new round requires a different number of teams than the previous round. But a draft is a pretty big shake-up of the League and if we can satisfy the no team greater than 6 or less than four rule with the numbers that we have than I would suggest that a Commissioner randomly selected player or two could be moved from one team to another to even up the teams and result in less upset to the league. We still would probably have to change a password or two but it could possibly be a simple as that.

Certainly at this point this is just a suggestion. However, the other point is if any team feels the need to anticipate a non-submission then now is probably a good point to speak up and mention it because we still have two weeks for a backup game to be assigned and completed. :)

Good advice! Captains take stock and get in touch with your fellow team members so that everyone has adequate and fair chance of completing a back-up game IF needed. Obviously, let the Commish know so he can assign a player.

I would defintley support the idea of a draft after this round. There's been a large number of new people, and a significant number of existing players who have left or been no-shows. My Team D in particular has at this point, potentially lost all 4 of the people we originally started with, so that is an important consideration for me.

As for non-submission, Team D has 3 games submitted so far, and PlayJeff has 4 games submitted to the MV that fit the criteria for the round. I could choose any 1 of those if the need arises. So at the least we'll get 4 games successfully completed.

sorry to hear you're leaving Shadow.

on a brighter note:

HAPPY NEW YEAR to the MVL!
best wishes to you and yours in the year to come :CONGRAT:

I don't think that a draft is needed at this point, but if that was the will of the players then by all means i would be happy to do so. A few random placements should sort out the team sizes quite easily.

It is a shame that we have seen a number of no-shows so far this round, and i do hold some hope that we may see that rectified still, there two weeks to go but the writing is on the wall.

Now should the random placements be from the pool of all players or just limited to the active players who joined post the start of this round. I prefer the later, by taking random players from the MVL player pool may shake up the teams a little too much, after all we just had a draft and we are all settling into our new teams still.

As Silver mentioned, could all captains please touch base with all their players to ensure they are indeed playing in the MVL still.

And yes, a Happy New Year to all. The Sydney fireworks were quite spectacular this year all, check out your cable news or YouTube to see it if you can....It's quite a sight.

here, i'll save you the effort: WWW Link

you're right, that looked like a really great display. not quite sure what to make of the music selection (Chaka Khan's I'm Every Woman), but a great show nonetheless.
Yea the music selection was not the best, i actually ended up muting my T.V and playing Metallica's One! :D

you mean you weren't there? i swear i saw a couple fembots on screen, pouring champagne for some drunk ;) ugh... i'm so hungover (we're on the other side of the date line here in north america).
Haha...

Yes some of my Fembots were there, they were charged with stealing the entire fireworks display before midnight, but they choose instead to get really drunk and work as waitress, i hear a few of them applied for jobs at Robohooters even.

Now where is that self destruct button.....

Hope you had an enjoyable night mate, i did devour a 6 pack on NYE but that was all. As for fireworks did anyone catch the Rio display....very impressive.
coup d'fembot?

i'm pretty sure i had a good time. i had a 6 pack, numerous shots of jack, and half a bottle of champagne. incidentally, "champagne" is french for "headache".

I assume everyone knows the story about the origin of the shape of champagne glasses. There are two classic types of champagne glasses; the tall and thin "flute" is the preferred form of connoisseurs since it concentrates the bubbles and bouquet, but the low round "coupe" glass is the earlier form and is a more fitting match to the usual alleged origin of the shape of the glass that is most often attributed to Marie Antoinette, Madame du Pompadour or Napoleon's Empress Josephine.

Regrettably there is no evidence that the rumored origin of the shape of the "coupe" glass is true. Nor is there any evidence of the truth of the rumor that the "charms" of prospective members of the famed Folies Bergere dance troupe were required to fit within the confines of such a glass.

However both of these tales do make nice stories. ;)

Back to a more MVL related topic.

I believe that above some concern was expressed for teams having enough games submitted. I took the liberty of going through the games that have been submitted to the League so far as well as games that have not been submitted to the league but have been posted to the metaverse and seem to fit this rounds criteria.

From the data that I see pretty much every team is in reasonable shape.

Team A actually seems to be in the worst position where only I have submitted, but both DethAdder and Piznit have qualifying games posted to the MV and are working on bettering these games. TheGreatEmperor (the name change is apparently aborted) has responded in Team A's private forum and promised a game within a day or two. THis would give Team A the requisite 4 submissions. The only one that hasn't been heard from is Bluntblade and he is both new to the League and in any case still has 11 days to respond.

In Team B, Defcon13 and Ghostwes have both submitted their games to the league and Berzelius and MarshallONeil have qualifying games submitted to the MV. The only question for Team B is CornhuskerMac.

Team C has no official submissions to the MVL (holding back per usual :) ) but all 5 members have at least one qualified game submitted to the MV and look to be in good shape.

In Team D, KizintiPatriarch and GalenEvil have submitted games to the league and PlayJeff45 and RexDaddy both have at least one qualifying game submitted to the MV. Team D currently has 6 members but one is ShadowWorrior who has announced that he's leaving. The other Team D member with no indication is Thebutteryfly, although he does still have the aforementioned 11 days to submit.

Team E seems in the best shape with Silverbeacher, MottiKhan, Neilo and Pndrev all having submitted to the league already (I guess we know who will get the 1st place submission bonus :) ). Team E is also currently a 6 man team with 2 new members, Iztok Bitnec and Velkyn Kyil yet to post.

All in all it seems that the teams in biggest danger of losing someone are those that have 6 members for this round anyway. I think we may not need any changes or draft at all, but of course we can make that decision when the time comes.

Quite possibly mumble, at the very least just a shuffle of players from the six man teams to the rest.

Nice work too by the way, though the growing trend of joining the league and then no-showing is getting to be a concern. Not sure what we can do to help people in that regard.

Update: Mumble, I submitted officially back on the 29th, in reply #171.

Cool. Thanks for the update. I see it was actually *before* Marshall's whose submission I almost missed as well.

We should take a look at this at the end of the round. There have been a number of rounds where there turned out to be far less no-shows than were worried about in the middle of the round.

However we did discuss having some kind of additional action that new members should take to validate their team assignment before membership became official. Nothing too complicated just acknowledging their team assignment by checking in with the teams thread here, or showing up at the Teams private forum at the Core or a simple PM to the Commissioner, or of course posting a game would work as well. Any of these things would be sufficient to "confirm" that the team assignment was acknowledged.

I want to put in another plug for people make sure to vote in the MVL Tiebreak Criteria thread. There's a pretty clear result and we do have 17 of 26 members already voted but let's get this percentage higher so that there is no doubt about the outcome. There is also still plenty of time to vote.

If you really don't care then at least post an abstention. We won't have to have many votes like this but it's important to get good representation when we do so that we have a result that can't be questioned and we can finally put the issue to bed.

we drank from flutes, and technically speaking we were drinking sparkling white wine (all "real" champagne comes from the region of France bearing the same name).

i didn't know that about the different glasses. i actually thought coupes were considered proper for weddings, and flutes for other celebrations. good to know.

another interesting tale about champagne regards its invention. it's attributed in popular myth to the benedictine monk, Dom Pérignon. the myth goes that upon openning and tasting the first bottle of the sparking white wine that would later be known as Champagne, he ran from his room and exclaimed, "Come quickly! I am drinking the stars!"

this is in fact untrue. carbonation in wine is caused by secondary fermentation in the bottle itself, and Pérignon actually worked very diligently to prevent this from happening. it was a major cause of bottles breaking (read: "exploding in a dangerous chain reaction") before they could be consumed, at least until more modern bottling methods were introduced. the first record of the phrase, "I am drinking the stars" appears to have been part of a marketing campain in the late 1800s by the producers of Dom Pérignon champagne, which bears no directly relationship to the person beyond the name itself.

still, the phrase, "I am drinking the stars!" is so full of romanticism, it's difficult to let go.
