Drengin - Invulnerability Fields

The Drengin are getting access to the invulnerability fields too early. They haven't researched the preceding techs, nor has anyone else. In fact, they're matching these monstrous arrays of shields with Pulse Cannons! The result is that my frigates can't even scratch their heavy fighters despite their mass driver attacks. I don't know how they're getting the fields, but it's definitly a bug.

Also... has the off-type defense issue been fixed? I'm surprised that my frigates, with 10 mass driver attack, can't even scratch heavy fighters with 36 shields. You'd think that the shields would be overpowered fairly easily with that weapon type.

Square root 36 = 6
=6 defence mass drivers
your 10 mass driver weapons >6 damage 40% of the time, other 60% attack is lower then defence?

Ive noticed this too, everyone had ultimate invulnerability within 20 turns of start. definitely a bug somewhere.

I've seen this one as well as seeing the Korath with Hypwewarp III about 50 or so turns into the game. I've seen the Torians with Warp Drive IV a similar number of turns. If it's not a bug, it should be.

Of course my paranoid side says this is a new "feature" of the espionage system, i.e., when you don't have sufficient espionage information you will get an innacurate list of techs on the screen for that race. I've noticed that these races will NEVER trade these techs no matter how much you offer them-perhaps it's because they actually don't have them. Now, that's unlikely, but I guess it's possible. I have scanned the warships of those races and yet to see them using those advanced engine designs. Who knows. I just hope someone looks into this one because it makes it difficult to playtest the Beta when you have the Korath wiping everyone out early in the game.

I've tried to pin down exactly where they are getting these high end technologies but i think they might just be pulling it from the ether.

The bizzare thing is they are dont seem to want to trade them for anything so how they managed to get them in the first place puzzles me... i've had contact with races that at first dont have it then suddenly seem to aquire it.

And it always seems to be the same techs, invulnrability field and the engine techs warp drive/hyper warp.

Believe me, it is quite possible to get them to trade those techs.

Yep, playing as the Iconians I was unlucky enough to have them as my neighbors... constantly have to bribe the bastards.

I've also noticed this in all of the TA betas so far, after a recent game CTD i was going through my debug and a couple lines i've never seen before check this out:

WARNING: CompleteResearchOnTech could not complete tech 51 because it was not found in the tech tree of the Iconian Refuge
Debug Message: Year: 2229. Torian Confederation traded Xeno Farm Construction III to the Iconian Refuge in exchange for Advanced Barren World Colonization

Debug Message: WARNING: CompleteResearchOnTech could not complete tech 9 because it was not found in the tech tree of the Drengin Empire
Debug Message: Year: 2229. Drengin Empire traded Enhanced Tri-Strontium to the Arcean Empire in exchange for Advanced Diplomacy

Debug Message: WARNING: CompleteResearchOnTech could not complete tech 202 because it was not found in the tech tree of the Arcean Empire
Debug Message: Year: 2229. Drengin Empire traded Warp Drive V to the Arcean Empire in exchange for Aquatic World Colonization

Debug Message: WARNING: CompleteResearchOnTech could not complete tech 218 because it was not found in the tech tree of the Iconian Refuge
Debug Message: Year: 2229. Iconian Refuge traded HyperWarp III to the Korath Clan in exchange for Star Democracy

always after the warning message the AI got access to technology it should have, the techs in bold are the ones that are suspect, meaning the AI doesn't have the preceeding techs. It kinda looks like the AI found a way to cheat!

I'm aware of the math. Thats not the behaviour I was seeing. Volley after volley outright missed. There was a bug a while back where the defenses barely degraded when hit by a series of off-type weapons. I was under the impression it was fixed, but I'm not sure.

Perhaps a more accurate way of stating my intended meaning is to say that I've never been able to get them to trade those techs (even playing as Terrans with their diplomatic bonus and offering every planet I own plus all cash, ships, and technology-just to see if they would do it). Moot point anyway, I've now started seeing their ships showing up with the Hyperwarp engines and invulnerability fields.

I think it has to do with improper linkage in the tech tree, i.e., they can skip over all other techs and go straight to those advanced techs. This was a known problem in other areas of the tech tree previously.

With 25% luck (or did I take the universalists, too?) I should have been doing more damage, yes. Regardless, between TWO seperate ships with those stats firing on the same target, the shields should not have been able to take the beating.

I don't really think luck should be increasing minimum damage, but thats another thread entirely. ;)
