Kzinti Empire - offical empire thread

You have dared to enter the lair of the most ferocious predators in the galaxy!

It is the ulitmate destiny of the Kzinti to conquer the other civilizations of the galaxy, subjugate and enslave any who may prove useful to us, and devour the rest. The Fanged God has ordained that this is how it will be.

In just 26 octals of days (7 months or so...Kzinti count in base 8), the Kzinti Empire rose from obscurity, to #1 on the Metaverse. With the blessings of the Fanged God, we have remained dominant for 100s more octals of days since that auspicious day.  We leapt past the other empires, and our mighty domain now encompasses over 32 million more light years than the second most powerful empire.  The most recent Galactic Map data shows that we have subjugated over 45% of the galaxy.  Many warriors from the old and dying empires have joined us, to avoid being eaten along with the rest.  We hunger to establish indefinite supremacy over all the inferior sentient species...

We have also been #1 on the AltMeta for over 3 years running. The Empire grows more powerful with each passing day as new conquests are won, and more warriors join us in our inevitable rise to rule the galaxy!

The Kzinti are a species of bipedal space-faring feline predators, who love nothing more than conquest and battle. Created by sci-fi writer Larry Niven, the Kzinti have had many stories written about them, most notably in the Man-Kzin Wars series of books. They have also shown up in the Star Trek universe, and a number of other realities.

"Kzinti flesh has a very strong and pungent taste. The weak among us are devoured by their litter-mates within a few moons of birthing. Only the swiftest and most ferocious of us survive to their first naming-day. Those not fit to survive will never live to perpetuate their inferior bloodlines. This is the natural law of the galaxy." - Kzinti Warrior

"The meaning of life is the hot blood of your prey on your tongue, the meat that rends beneath your teeth, the corpse of your enemy left in the sun for the carrion eaters to finish, your defeated foe groveling in submission before you. That is what life is. We are the Kzinti, and we stronger, swifter, wiser, and more ferocious than any other race ever was or will be." - Kzinti philosopher

The thread ebbs and flows, as with everything. For me at least, yesterday I was away at a real-life gaming party with friends. Played some Carcassonne, Risk: Godstorm, and Wii. :) Now back to conquering galaxies! I've got a medium game almost done (50-60k), and a huge game (120-150k) about 20% done.

edit: Finished the mdium game, and started another large one, so I've got two nice ones going at the moment.

Also, missed your post before SB....you really couldnt think of anything? C'mon put some effort into it! You're not sick again are you? ;)

Motti, any updates on the imminent a**-kicking of the AIs in your game?

Guess you dont have cats SB...they have 5 sharp and dangerous ends, and one soft one. ;) I first heard that way of describing cats in Calvin & Hobbes.

A great welcome to our newest member, Issaacwith2as! May the Fanged God always grant you victory! :)

From the old & decaying empires, we have had nearly 30 warriors join us over the last few weeks, since we rose to galactic prominence. Wisely, they chose not to get eaten along with the rest...

We are steadily moving towards 12 million points, and are about a third of the way there now!

Actually an 11th of the way there now. ;)

Technically correct, at least from how I said it before, hehe. What I meant was that we are at 11.3 million, so about 30% of the way between 11 & 12 million. You grammar-Nazi FB! ;)

I finished up my latest large game, and got my best score for that size due to a couple lucky random events. One was an economic boom for the last three years, which pumped up my economy a lot. The other event happened when I was just 3 months away from completing the game. The last AI was down to one planet, which I had blanketed with spies, and then the event where they find a precursor device which increases the PQ of every uninhabitable planet by 7 happened! Their last planet was near the middle of the map, and I had set it on abundant planets, so I gained about 60 planets out of the event. I extended the game for another year to let the population on the new colonies build up, and it ended up increasing my score by about 17k, to a total of 103k. :) That's the first large-size map I've surpassed 100k on.

Anybody a fan of the Total War series of games? (Rome, Shogun, & Medieval) The newest installment, Empire: Total War should be out sometime this year. It looks freakin' fantastic from what I've seen so far! Cant wait to try out the real-time 3D naval combat.

Hey Cumberberg, did you get those Kzinti files I emailed you?

Hey KP -- Thanks for the Kzinti files. Just finished up a long game, so looking forward to trying something new.

Nice quote :) Be wary of those men that call themselves Diplomats though...for their words are as deadly as their orbital strike lasers!

I did notice your latest conquest yesterday. A new personal high score for you I see.  :CONGRAT:  I just noticed you bumped it up to Obscene difficulty as well...excellent!

I've got a game on a huge map going where I hope to break my own record of 150k. I'm about 70% done with it, so I should complete it by the weekend.

Thanks KP! It was a tough win... and one that seemed to take forever. One of those where you claw your way inch by bloody inch over the hump and hit that point where you know you're going to win... but then it takes a really REALLY long time to storm every, single last backwater planet in the universe.

As for you, I don't know how you keep up the pace! You're posting these major wins all the freaking time. Do you ever sleep????

True true. I'm playing a game at obscene as well. It's outright painfull. I found my rush wasn't quite as good, and the AIs are very entrenched. If only every kryn planet had an OFM it would go so much quicker...

Anyway, I say stick to maso. Obscene isn't worth it IMO. For this game, I'd better get my highest score, but somehow I'm sure I won't. (probably because it'll take so long to play out)

That mopping-up part of the game really is the least interesting. Well, that and building the military starbase array...

How can I sleep when there is still tasty prey to hunt? ;)

I've found that anything above Masochistic requires too much micro-management for it to be too much fun. Yeah, the OFM is nice because it cuts down on the tedium of killing all the defenders one by one. Some of the reasons I'm hoping for my highest score in my current game are that I got both the Mind Control Center and Spin Control Center quite early, which will pump up both my econ and mil scores. Also, I had an economic boom start in year 2, and with a couple handy re-loads of saved games, I've kept it going into year 6 so far. ;) I think I'm making about 60-70k/week, and I try to keep my treasury below 20k, so that it will continue that way.

Interesting... I've been trying to play on Obscene because I thought the boost to the score would be worth it. Maybe I'm overestimating the bump in points for playing on a higher difficulty level?
I think the score differential from one difficulty level to the next is minimal, but I dont have any hard facts to back that up. I just remember seeing it discussed here and there. With the forum search function not working correctly, its impossible to look around for the info. Maybe the wiki has some info on the subject?

Well I tend to think unless you get a great start at obscene, you tend to get bogged down and from that alone your score will suffer.

Now, if that hit is bigger than the scoring difference from maso to obscene is hard to say.

What is easy to say, is that maso is still fun for me, while obscene is just tedious. (like suicidal)

The only good thing about obscene is that it's harder early/mid game. If only the AI would use it's advantages correctly. If it did, there'd be no way to win with all those bonuses...

I looked around a bit and couldnt find specific info on the scoring differential between difficulty levels. I think your opinion is correct in that if the micromanagement is too tedious, its not worth it, unless you are totally going for just points. I try to strike a balance between points-grinding and fun, so I dont get nearly the scores I could if I used every trick in the book. I think if I did, I would just get sick of it pretty quickly.

My Wednesday night RPG group didnt meet last night as we usually do, so I used my unexpected free-time well and finished up my huge game. Got a new personal high score of 171,850! :D I had everyone conquered by early year 7, but extended it to earn about 40k more points.

Thanks! Countless slaves were captured, and my t'kzintar are indeed well-fed today. ;) They are enjoying the spoils of war captured from the inferior species that we defeated! Many of the greatest Heroes from this glorious victory were granted planetary systems as their own personal fiefdoms.

This bumps up my Hraak-Riit character from 41st to 26th in the standings. I'm getting closer to my goal of matching Gallagher's achievment of having all 3 characters in the top 25.

When I get some more RAM, I plan to try a gigantic map and shoot for maybe a 400k game.

I'm curious KP, your 170 score, did you milk that at all, or did it just go long?

I've had a few games I milked maybe 6-12 months, but I havent' tried going further than that.

I'm curious if you did extend it, how do you draw the line?

My theory on that is that if the game is over ~4 years, you're probably better off extending it to 6-7 years. Which is sad. To me, finishing a game fast should always be better.

Congrats today to Cumberberg for posting his first 0-year wins!  :CONGRAT:

Congrats also to TorontoRock for submitting another huge victory, this time 182k! I'll try to out-do that with my next huge game. ;) He also pumped out a few more 0-year wins as well.

One more piece of info about the 0-year wins that my be helpful. The way the Metaverse scoring works, if you have submitted high-scoring games, and then submit lower-scoring games (as with the 0-year wins), your point gain to your MV score will be pretty minimal for the lower-scoring ones. One way to get around this is to designate different characters for different sizes/scores of games. So having one character for mega-scores and one for 0-year games works well to maximize points-socring potential.

I definitely milked it. I could have won by year 7, but in order to build up an even more gargantuan military, finish my military starbase array, and let my population max-out on all my planets, I extended it. Each year that I extended it, I saved on Dec 15th, then wiped out the last enemy planet. Then I would check my score, and how much it had increased from the previous year. If it was still a sizable gain, I'd reload and do another year. Once the point gain became small enough as to not be very significant, thats when I decided to end the game. This is the least interesting/fun part of the game, but at least it goes quickly, because aside from moving new ships to the MSBA, I'm really doing little else other than just hitting end turn. I always end on Dec 22nd, to take full advantage of any points gain for that year. I'm not that great at playing for speed, so my games tend to be longer than they should.

A little update to my gigantic map game in DL...

As planned, my not colonizing any planets propelled me to the #1 spot in all catagories after the first attack. After the war, I built 5 colonizers to take the remaining empty planets. The AIs on all sides were left in agony on their few smoking hulk planets.

The war lasted quite some time though. My "flea" ships were very effective in capturing and dispatching the enemy. I also built medium attack ships and fast transports to slingshot across the map with the aid of my starbase array, built in year 1. It's approaching the end of year 2 and I have about 13,000 ships bogging the game down. Losing their way with the autopilot bug and generally soaking up any processor power that my machine can cough up. My planets are still building more ships to add to the meyham. The enemy is down to around 10 ships left, so no threat there. I still need to finish building up my planets and economy before I'm done with this one.

I only have time to get anywhere from one to three turns per day on this game now. Other issues are taking my attention away from it. I'll get back to it before too much longer though.
