Improvement Removal

Question about Change

I see that the new beta will remove planetary improvements which you do not have the tech for. My only concern is that this might destroy galactic wonders. If it does, will the game allow new ones to be built?

I would imagine that the Indestructible tag on most Achievements would prevent this.

Another question, however: Will this also apply to improvements being upgraded into improvements you don't have? I ask because I have for a while considered it a useful strategy when the Dread Lords appear to let them take over one of my planets, then take it back in a turn or two when everything is in the process of being made into Industrial Sectors, thus allowing me to get Industrial Sectors long before I have the tech.

I think this is one of the things they are trying to prevent.

I think Seth Gaines has a good question though.

I completely understand the whole stopping the production of improvements your don't have the tech for. As after you concur a planet, the plans aren't going to be stored in a nice little box. However, already built improvements should not be destroyed, but be maybe halfed. Which makes sense as you would not have the running instructions. Then at least they are there, and the planet is not thrown back to the stone age, but you will probably want to build over them.

Maybe they could be downgraded into a version you have the tech for?

Also, will this apply, for example, to Slave Pits if you have Factories?

Probably not a solution that would please the realism crowd, but reverting them instantly to the next best thing you have (provided there's no ethical choice or anything involved) seems like a pretty sound idea to me, if they have to be removed one way or another.

I think this is the best idea in this post being that if one took over a planet, leaving the buildings in tact, they would still be there. So there fore even though I don't posess this technology I should be able to use it at least to some means. Adding to this though if there are a planet full of one specific building you should be able to figure out this technology or be given a greater chance (based on the number of these structures) to learn this technology so that if there was one Industrial Sector you probrably won't be able to figure it out but still be able to use it at some level weather it be 10% or 70% depending on your level of technology. On the other hand if there are 20 Industrial Sectors you should be able to almost be sure you figured out the technology, however, again based on your tech level.

Just my ideas, sorry if I lost you.

I'm with you, what does everyone else think?

Don't know how hard this would be to implement, but put an icon on the Industrial Sector (or whatever). Similar to a spy icon - it's still there, but not entirely functional. Then let it run at whatever capacity your current tech is at (enhanced factory production level from that industrial sector you can't build for yourself yet), but you get stuck paying the full maintenance costs for it.

Gimps the factory, but it's still somewhat functional and you get stuck with the choice - do I pay this outrageous upkeep, or build my own factory over it, knowing I may have to pay again if I later choose to upgrade it back to what it started as?
