Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor - updated schedule

We put the question to gamers -- which would you prefer: A Christmas release of Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor or a January release with an extended public beta program? To our surprise, the answer wasn't even close: January.  Over 9 out of 10 people preferred having a longer public beta to a Christmas release.

To that end, below is our updated schedule:

Date Release Details
15-Nov Beta 2A Yor, Updated Tournaments, Torian updates
29-Nov Beta 3 Iconians Added, Terror Stars
6-Dec Beta 3A Korx, Drath Added
13-Dec Beta 3B Krynn Added
20-Dec Beta 3C Thalan Added, Altarians Added
3-Jan Beta 4 New Invasion Screen, New Victory Condition
15-Jan Release Polish of previous editions

The idea is to be able to reintroduce the major new civilizations one at a time and provide maximum time for player input on balancing them.  We plan to have another beta tomorrow which will introduce the Yor, update the Torians, and re-balance some of the updated economics.

If you would like to join in on the beta, simply pre-order Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor.

Yay!

Any chance you'd release Beta 3 on the 27th? That way I'd have Terror Stars for my birthday! Pretty please?

Cool, seems like I will be sharing a birth-day with you, wouldn't mind playing with Terror Stars on my birthday:-)

Actually, if Stardock releases terror stars on the planned date, it will be on my birthday. Obviously, they know which is the superior date.

Of course, the 27th comes earlier...Yay for early birthday gifts

Can't wait to get my hands on that new beta. Finally my beloved KillerRobots come to town. Only problem is that I'm in Russia at the moment, so it will probably have to wait until tomorrow before I can get the update

Out of curiosity, what year is yours? If that's the same as well ('79 here), then Stardock simply HAS to move the schedule, democracy and all that.

Seems like we are not that far apart, I think, mine is ('86).

I agree with James, I think the new victory condition will be a set of wonders that you have to build (i.e. a manufacturing victory). Something like complete the 6 crystals of domination and rule the galaxy!

Just speculating.

I'm hoping it's something like this but using terror stars. Build all the parts of the TS and then use it to destroy the galaxy

Shame that there is no hype for poor beta 2A. Maybe it's a bit behind and getting lot's of last minute attention. I'm looking forward to seeing the return of the Yor. I'm also real curious what they are going to do to the Torians.....

The Yor are cool, but they seem unbalanced in early and late game. In early you can't really have any direct buildings that help the economy, you have to research. I got really close to debt, then I got the economy efficency centers(or whatever they are). That really boosted me. But after I conquered the Dark Yor(irony) I stopped building a military(bad move). Into the late game the Arceans declared war and I had been waiting for this, as I had been fattening up on techs. But I build my first ship and it sunk my economy because it was so powerful.

A few poor decisions on my part, but it is hard to balance the Yor.

Another thing, it is really hard to keep the Yor rich and happy at the same time. After the first economy building, you get a few techs. After that it just never gets any better, other than trade. You get these cool farms that give you morale bonuses, but that only can go so far because it is a catch 22.

PS: I thought the Yor wouldn't even have morale? I mean they're computers....they don't have happy or angry feelings. Is this morale thing only in the Beta?

PPS: Any tips for playing as the Yor?

Ashbery: Yup...gamers hate the screen THAT MUCH

Nope, boogie, have to disagree with you. Gamers like gameplay, dilatantes and (shudder) action players like graphics. Those of us gamers who groove on the gameplay first, no matter if you haven't prettied it up much yet, will be keeping this baby on our hard-drive way longer than the "See, they're little Torians, not little Humans" crowd.

Those of us who still revere MOO and MoM and (heavenly trumpets) M.U.L.E. don't do it for the 2D graphics!

Continuation from jubjub15's theme.

This is just some postulating! Instead of moral to keep the Yor happy (seeing as machines even sentient ones shouldn't need to be happy)why don't we give them the need for power. You know to keep their empire running efficiently. If they start running low on power or their power source their so called moral would start to dwindle. So some of their tech lines could research new ways for power production. This could even lead into different races having different mining resources. i.e. I know we have different planets why could we not have different types of steroids which when mined would produce different commodities. This would make the asteriod race a bit more specific, and during war times the races would have to protect their mines a bit more than they do now. heck the Yor's final research tech could be a machine or starbase that is able to directly draw unlimited power from the sun giving them the ultimate so called moral boost but a ripper of a boost to military as well.

On the research area; even though they are sentient machines they woulds still not be able to actually think up new stuff so much as to gather information. This of course would make them obviously like the Borg or the replicators. Thus the Yor would have to conquer planets to get most of their technology. To help them be on an even par with the other races, they would get maybe three techs from conquering a planet. This would make for a very different game play when facing the Yor as in if they really got going they could be a very big threat (as they should be) so players would have to watch very carefully to not let the Yor get a too strong a foot hold in the galaxy.

All this would obviously have to be balanced. Hope you enjoyed my two cents worth!

Yes, I like that.

Perhaps energy could be replaced with something else for the Thalans.

It's stupid for Thalans to have morale, what are they going to do if they get mad? They would die off without a queen. Speaking of the queen, does one come with each colony ship? That would be a tad dangerous if another queen was hanging around. If that happened then I could see that happen. Unless even the quuen doesn't have sentient thought, which would make sending a queen feasible. I guess you would need a hive mind like the Zerg have to have a intergalactic hive race.

The Thalans in my opinion, are the twins of the Torians. They are like ants, which have a large population. The Driver ants(AKA Siafu) of Africa can have 20 million ants in one colony. The Thalans should have enourmous numbers and be unmatched when it comes to being industrious. A hybrid of Torans and the Yor--one badass race.

The Thalans could be a truely unique race if stardock does it right.
