spying doesn't work

Which version of the game are you running as your post is a little vague.

I figure he's talking about the most recent TA beta, as that's the problem I'm having and others (further down) have posted too.

I'm using beta 2

Have you sent in a saved game etc to the bugs email address?
All copies of any 'bugs' in TA are useful to the Devs so please always send them in as well as posting about them in the forums.

I have noted this as well. I am playing Beta 2 of TA-large map with three computer players (all but Korath). You can train new spys but cannot deploy them to alien worlds as the place spy button is non-functional. In fact, I had the Mega spy event occur (the one where a spy appears on every planet without the counter espionage improvement) and not one spy appeared on any planet in the galaxy.

That is very weird...I'll bring it up to the team on Monday    

Same here. TA 1.80e beta 2 under Vista Ultimate (x86). I'm playing as the Terrans (Medium/All Abundant/Tough). Can produce spies but cannot place them. I'll be sending some stuff to [email protected].

I have also had this problem with TA 1.8e running XP pro playing as the Terrans.

I can`t place spies either

Problem fixed for 2a.
