Mega events question

Does the arrival of the Dread Lords classify as a Mega Event? I'm assuming the hundreds of pirates spawning is a mega event, but I didn't know if the Dread Lords was - I like having them around, but hate the pirates so I wanted to know if I could turn off mega events safely and still see them.
And also, what other things are mega events? The faction that spawns mid game and takes a few planets from everyone? Discoveries on planets? Every once in awhile I see something completely new and I'm thinking some of them are pretty cool and I don't mind having happen, but others are just a pain.
I've also never understood what happens when someone discovers some machine that makes them a "god" overtime (I've never finished a game where that happened). What exactly does it do?
