Making a truly "custom" Race by editing some of the games files......

Good morning everyone,
I know I know... (why), but please... just let me be a dork
for a couple weeks and help me to understand how do I go about editing the files of the game to make my own "mod"?
ALL I want to do is simply take a look at one of the races, and willy nilly change values for THEIR buildings/etc... is this an easy venture?
The reason I wanna do it is simply for fun. I'd like to make the Korx come with 150 to Trading for example instead of the stock 50... I'm assuming this is easy to do?
