For pete's sake, how do I get to Planetary Improvements? I see them in this screenie:

WWW Link

But it's not in my tree. I have grav control researched, what other pre reqs are there?

Well that explains why concepts of malice aren't showing up in my tree!

You may have a bug. I was able to get to Planetary Improvements with just grav control as the Arceans. I had researched a couple of other things first, but no more than three or four other early techs at the most.

Also, several techs have very undescriptive... erm, descriptions. For example, what does the Cathedral of Valor do? Is it supposed to give an Improvement? Also, when trading with other races it can be very hard to tell what certain techs do by right-clicking them; for example, Xeno Slavery has a blank effect description.

The ethical tree is a different story. It can't show you "concepts of malice" yet if you haven't chosen an evil alignment. If you chose "good", then branch end would be different.

However, I'm now suspiscious of that screenshot, because the "planetary improvemetns" and "xeno research" looks out of place on that drengin tech tree. I'm thinking the person who told me that PI was on the drengin tree may have been confused with something he picked up in trade. Will someone playing the drengin confirm for me whether or not that tech is on their tree or not?

Man, if it's not, I think tech trading is going to make for some really crazy results in TA.

This is almost undoubtedly it. I can see the difference between the default Arcean tree and the one I have now. The most noticeable items are the engine components I picked up in trade. They shifted the whole look of that part of the tech tree. I see the same dif between your screenshot and the default Drengin tech tree.

My list of techs that are like this is up 5 at the moment playing Terrans w/no tech trading as of yet.

And it is not limited to new techs either, Stellar Cartography for the Terrans has no description.

It's very possible that the other person did get it from a trade.  When  you trade for a tech, it will replace the equivalent tech in your own tech tree with the version from the civ with whom you traded.

If you do not have an equivalent tech, the tech is merged into your own tree based on its tech requirements.  So if you have this tech tree:

  A __> B

and you trade for tech C (which is not naturally in your own tech tree), and C requires A, it will be merged in like so:

  A ___> B
    \___> C

The same thing happens for stolen techs as well.

So if the other person got Planetary Improvements, it would show up in his own tech tree screen when he viewed it.

Techs shouldn't be invisible and then pop up when you research their requirements.  This should only happen for ethics-based techs.  There is a button at the bottom of the research screen that will allow you to hide future techs.  You could check to make sure that is off.  Just click the one in the middle and it should show everything.
