TA 1.8c beta 1: Trivial Initial Bugs

These are all trivial interface-type bugs I'm seeing in TA 1.8c beta 1 under Vista Ultimate (x86) using an NVIDIA 7600GT graphics card. They're so small, I didn't want to set up different threads for each.

- As I mentioned in the beta announcement thread, the installation routine doesn't add a launch icon to my Desktop (nor to Games Explorer). A manually created shortcut to TALauncher.exe works fine.

- When starting a New game, under the Pick Your Civilization screen, clicking multiple times on a race picture causes the political party to change. Also, Political Parties which won't fit in the small box on that screen have scroll arrows. But, they don't work until after you grab and move the slider itself.

- On the Customize Your Civilization screen, the Overview tab's Clear button has the same affect on Political Party as the race picture, above: multiple clicks change the Political Party. Ditto for the scroll arrows and slider, except that the slider doesn't even show here. The Abilities tab has a similar problem with the Reset button: various Abilities in the list get outlined and that outline jumps around with multiple clicks. Back to the Overview tab, the last item in Race Technologies for the Terrans is "A history of extremes." All the other entries have each word with initial capitals. That entry doesn't.

- Once in the game, the Research Tree doesn't have tool tips for the three icons on the bottom line of the display. They should pop up things like "Show/Hide Researched Techs," "Show All Techs," and "Show/Hide Future Techs."

- This is the same as from previous versions, but I thought I'd mention it anyway: from within the planet screen, the description of the Traditional Factory needs work. With asterisks around the upper-cased things needing work, it reads as:

"The *BASIC* factory increases this colony's *THE* social *+* military production on *THIS* planet by up to 4 *MORE* industrial units. Depending on what percentage of your manufacturing capacity you are using and what percentage of it is directed towards social and military, *THIS FACTORY'S CAPACITY WILL BE USED*."

"Basic" should be "Traditional," "The" isn't needed, "+" should be "and," "this" is redundant on planet since it's already specified by colony, "more" is redundant because of "increases." "This factory's capacity will be used" should probably be a percentage, but, really, the sentence doesn't impart much information.

- On the main map, none of the buttons and only a few of the icons have tool tips (I can specify them if needed). Also, the Set Rally Point button doesn't de-activate if you right-click. I had to ESC to the menus and come back to de-activate it and get my regular cursor back without setting a rally point.

That's all I've found so far. Trivial fit-and-finish things. However, I'd like to mention that the displays look wonderful. The new graphics system and UI changes are really sharp looking.

also wanna add in that the game crashed on me when I was trying to trade research techs. Also noticed that it takes like 10 min for it to load on large so I don't wanna think how long it'd take on a immense map

Already sent in asa bug report, but wanted others to know it's reported at least once.

Playing as Terran, the tech tree is a little...odd when you look down the beam weapon tree. After lasers it ends. Plasma weapons stems off the mass driver tree.

Something else that I'm not sure is on purpose, but when playing arceans, the tech "Adamantium Armor" is available at the start of the game. Sure, with Very Fast research on, it would take 300 weeks to finish, but I still am not sure if it shouldn't be at the end of the armor tree.

Another minor problem. As a Terran, I just finished researching Artificial Gravity (AG). The write-up on the completion screen mentions "obvious and subtle" benefits of it and then goes on to describe "obvious" benefits. But, there's no mention of any "subtle" benefits. Also, the last paragraph reads as follows (problem asterisked and capitalized):

"The historical fleets of the Drengin Empire and the Arcean Empire in the pre-artificial gravity era are very obvious. Their hulls spin on a super conducting pivot powered by regulated micro bursts of thrust to keep the spinning *CONSTITUENT.*..."

First, "constituent" should probably be something like "consistent." But, the more general comment is a question of why the paragraph is even there. We've got AG, so why should I care about historical alien fleet obviousness? Perhaps they don't have (or ever get) AG? The paragraph is probably just for flavor, so feel free to ignore my general comment. But, the word should be changed, at least.

A couple more. But, I think these are carry-overs from previous versions. First, when you colonize a colony (Terran's anyway), the planetary name is editable. It's in white lettering on a light blue background and is very hard to read. A different color combination would be preferrable.

Second, what's the method used in the planetary screen for selecting the next active tile? It seems to be random. I'd prefer something orderly (like left to right, top to bottom) so I can quickly and easily add improvements and have a better chance of finding them later. Also, and this is new, I love the new improvement icons that go on those tiles. But, they are somewhat hard to see on the new planetary background. I don't know what can be done about it, though.
