Wish list for returning players

Bringing us back into the fold

So I've been absent for a long time from the GalCiv2 community. I devoured the first game and played it endlessly, then pre-ordered Dark Avatar and before I was able to really sink my teeth into it, I got pulled away and haven't really been back since. Now that I see the ramp-up for the new expansion is in full swing, my curiosity is piqued again.

What's troubling me, though, is that while I was able to keep pace with all the patches and changes made to GalCiv2, I never really did anything with the expansion. Never played the single player campaign, and only played one or two rounds in sandbox mode. I never got deeply into the spies and asteroid mining.

In short, I feel a bit unprepared to play TA when it comes out. I'm going to dig into DA in the next week or two, but it's already undergone so many revisions, that it's difficult for me to figure out what's going on.

The manual helps a little, but there have been so many nerfs, tweaks, boosts, and AI upgrades, it's hard to know what's going on under the hood.

Is there any way that those of us who have largely been absent since GalCivII could get some sort of a primer guide? A collection of dev journals and news posts that detail the relevant alterations. The changelogs are one thing, but I always find the posts and comments to be much more informative.

Even if it was something as simple as a post with direct links to all of the change threads, it would be much simpler than wading through post after post trying to figure out the info I need to get the most out of the game.

Sure, I know the journals are there, but it's time consuming to wade through all of them and take out the choice bits of info.

I just thought that maybe if there are others out there in my shoes who could use some "up to speed" material on the current state of DA.

I was reading around and all of a sudden I found stuff about engine nerfage to prevent sneak attacks, and I had no idea it was in there, or what the limits were, or how to find out more information. To make matters worse, comments in the thread made it seem like the nerf might get removed, but then I couldn't find out whether it had or not.

When I go in to make a sneak attack (which I do from time to time, and think is a perfectly legitimate tactic) I'd like to know up front what rules of engagement the game will place upon me.

I'm the sort of player who will probably not give up after such an occurence catches me off guard, but a player who hasn't touched the game for a year and hasn't kept up on journals and changelogs isn't going to know what happened and will feel cheated.

If I'm the only one who thinks it's a good idea, then they shouldn't waste their time. I'm sure TA will come with a new manual that will spell these things out.

It's a good idea. I'm just not sure where to send you.

Here are a few links to get you started:
The Death of Morale Buildings
NLC's and Industrial Sectors broke my economy
Production explained - how various bonuses apply

One of the biggest things you are probably missing is what's become known as the "All-X" strategies. This involves building only factories or only research buildings and getting the "missing" category via planetary focus. These two AARs should help with that.
Wyndstar's Altarian AAR - All tech approach
My Suicidal AAR - All factory, includes saved game files

It's certainly not everything, but it's a start at least.
