Military starbases: Try to place these inside important star systems or between you and your enemy. They give your ships in their area of effect all kinds of bonuses, like extra attack or defense stats, faster repair, faster ships, slower enemies... etc.

Economic starbases: Try to place these inside important starsystems also, especially if the planets need the bonuses... Also try to place them around major trade route intersection areas (your trade routes!).

Influence starbases: Put these by enemy asteriod miners (IF YOU PLAY DA) or by another race's planets (try to get the best planets you can!). Make sure you research far up the influence branch, and then keep installing the influenza modules.

ALSO: It is a very long and tedious job to upgrade starbase to their full potential.
the devs are still trying to figure out a way to make it less micro-managed.

Taking over a planet by means of an influenza module is a sick way of doing things.

Apart from that, OP, you should have searched the forums or checked the Wiki. And no, I will not spread your question to everyone I know because that is commonly referred to as spamming.

ROFL

One thing to remember with starbases is that their bonuses stack! That means if you have two eco starbases with overlapping borders you get more than you would from a single one.

The only starbases i always build are economic ones. I try to have at least one fully upgraded one covering all of my planets. I do this for the bonus to production in all 3 areas. So careful placement that covers the most planets at once is important.

Its great toi have like two 34% starbases covering your tech capital. If i manage to have trade route i will add the modules for that too.

I have built military bases but find that its a lot of work and money to get one that will really help your ships and then in no time the action is way past that point and into enemy territory, leaving the base to collect dust. However, the additional speed modules can get your ships across your space faster. And as the Yor i like to make sure i have the negative speed modules to see my opponent crawl at 1 pc / turn. The thing with military star bases is that if you really need them then your enemy is stong and your base will not last. If your base can protect itself then you probably dont need it for your ships in the first place. Imagine all those constuctors were built as war ships instead.

Influence starbases... I'll use these to help one of my plantes that got colonized but then isolated in the rush, to help it not defect. But mostly if there's a cluster of AI planets in my space i'll build one to get those to hopefully flip.

Sometimes if you have an important couple of planets close to the corner of a sector you can get some extreme stacking.

Each sector can have 4 starbases, so if a few planets are in a corner you can put them within the sphere of 16 (4 in each sector near the corner) fully upgraded econ starbases.

This results in a huge output increase. Research in the thousands or planets that can churn out battleships in a couple of turns. Your pay for this output though, so make sure your economy can support it.
