How to loose friends and alienate races

How to loose friends and alienate races

Is there anyone that knows just how much alien civs take in to account when deciding how much they like you?

For example if you vote in the favour or against them in the UP votes do they take that into account?

What about if you cut corners through their space, does that annoy them?

And what about your choice of who to fight or align yourself with. If they are warm with X race and then I invade X race do they suddenly take a dim view of me?

AFAIK it does. However you can freely (without "they don't trust us" penality) attack anyone who gave YOU his treaty.

so if i GET a treaty from, say, a minor race, i can attack it and not get the negative dipolmacy? Same with majors?

I was holding off trying to get any treaties causei was planning to invade and didnt want to not be able to trade later.

The penalty you get, does it hurt your relations with opther races or do you just not get very good trades from then on?

A more suitable example then our modern world might be (to make it easy by citing something that was in a film recently) when the Greek states banded togther to resist the Persians in 490BC Sparta and Athens executed*1 Perisan ambassadors sent to demand earth and water from them, and in doing so declared war.

The Persians were far more powerful, but the Greek states had to commit to fight an impossible fight now or an utterly impossible one years later (or become slaves).

Back then people did not think for one moment that they were the same people, each regarded the other as barbarians.

*1 The ambassador visiting Sparta was indeed thrown down a well, but not buy Leonidas who was a young man at the time, but the King at the time Cleomenes.

see what you're saying, but I don't think it makes the best sense.
Most countries that are afraid of other more powerful countries try to strike up Economic related deals/etc... not go to war only to be slaughtered for fear of waiting until 'it's too late'.

Most countries don't have to worry about being completely obliterated by any opposing nations. Would you just sit and "strike up Economic related deals/etc" when another race of creatures is exterminating other races in the galaxy one by one? Even if it was a lost cause, I'd fight to be free. You can't compare this to our world right now. We're all the same people.

Put yourself in the their position. You can't just quit the game, so you have to play till you're number one or you've been exterminated. Might as well go out with a bang if you're going to lose anyway, right? I certainly wouldn't sit and wait till it was my turn to die.

I agree with your stance in that situation, BUT that's not me:

I'm simply trying to avoid ALL war - meaning, I'm NOT at war w/anyone, so ^^^ doesn't pertain to my situation in the slightest.

So basically, I like playing Evil w/out trying to go to war w/anyone if at all possible.

Kinda anti Evil if you will - I just enjoy the bonuses - they fit the way I play - but having everyone hate me 'simply' because I'm evil pisses me off.

I'm basically like a Hitler that NEVER invaded Poland - does that make sense?

I guess being hated is the downside. You cant simply get all the bonuses when you colonize a planet and then still have everyone like you. As it is, evil is overpowered compared to good and arguably neutral.

I know we all have different play styles but to go eveil really is to go military conquest. Other than the MCC the evil structures and bonus weapons are all greaed toward going to war. Well, i guess the slave center could be used to build parade floats, err i mean constructors.

You mentioned earlier that you're playing with all victory conditions turned off except military conquest, yes? That's forcing all the other races into territorial expansion as their only goal, so naturally it's going to be a warlike galaxy. If you turn those other options back on, it might be easier to maintain peace. And you can try for one of those goals yourself.

Of course this might force you into declaring war on a race that gets too close to a tech victory, or one that's going for an influence win and starts flipping your planets. Like most 4X games, a degree of conflict is built-in. You can't just sit back and turtle forever.

Well, you could stack the deck by setting up a galaxy that only has other Evil races (and custom races set to evil), and see how that goes. They'll still start to hate you if your influence on shared borders is too strong.

THANK you so much for the clarification! This makes more sense to me now.

"You mentioned earlier that you're playing with all victory conditions turned off except military conquest, yes?"

Yes sir, I was, but NOW, on my current game I have two things checked: conquest & allied victory... hopefully, that should be more of the type of game I'm going for.

And lol about "turtling forever", but dammit, that is SO much fun   , that's really what I'm aiming for. Obviously, I don't wanna play EVERY game like that, but that's what I'm going for atm.

The current game I'm in now - I'm playing as a new race for the first time  :
customized KORX - went 70% on the population growth pointwise  , it's a lil silly and overdone, but I was curious to see how fast my planets would populate, and BOY (lol) do they populate fast... it's funny because it's too damn fast... I think I wasted points on that, but anyway.

I'm playing a game w/KORX now, so I'm gonna see how far I can get w/this trading business and trying to be cool w/everyone - btw: I'm NOT going to make a single Evil choice, I'm gonna try to be Neutral in this game from start to finish. Have Conquest and Allied Victory buttons turned on for this current game.

What fun this software is and THKS to everyone who's helping me through this, I DEFINITeLY wouldn't be jamming as much as I am if it wasn't for this forum and the fine individuals who inhabit it.

I'm playing the Korx too right now and after choose the "good" decision all 4 times i was given a moral choice it still says that im leaning evil.
Yeah, I've been leaning Neutral in regards to all of my decisions I've had to make - havn't gone for the alignment tech yet, but I'm gonna attempt going Neutral...

Hopefully, this will alleviate some of the heat from the other races.

(current game - 7 AIs, Drengin are on Bright)
The Drengin think they can mess with me... they're still on Small hulls and I slipped getting Large hulls teched along with Harpoon 3s

: )

Needless to say, even though the Drengin own more than half the galaxy: their tables are about to be turned against them soon.

I think i should have just picked the evil choices and then paid the 2500 to go neutral. or at this point maybe just go evil. I really wanted to actually use the Korx abilities but wars break out beforer i get get all those trade routes done.

I think the Korx should be permanently changedto neutral. it just makes more sence. Even if in the future they do somehow become the mercenaries they're supposed to be. Like they will fight against good or evil, its just money to them.
