Black hole eruptor

I recently updated my ship design from positronic torpedo to black hole eruptor, but I'm not so sure it was the best move. My small ship configuration went from 33 damage to 50 but the cost jumped from 295 to 400.

Now my colonies churn them out at a reduced rate and it's slower to build a "swarm" of small fighters.

Anyone else feel that at a certain point one is better off not implementing the most powerful weapon available?

Depends on money.

If its going to be a tight map, I always go for mass drivers, as they seem to be the "cheaper" option.

Stay at positronic II - best bang for buck in the galaxy.

The final tech in any weapons line is always the most powerful you can get for space, but at an increased cost. Generally, the weapon design immediately preceding it is more cost effective.

If you've researched all the way up to Blackhole Eruptor, it shouldn't be too hard to get Massive Hull Building and build Huge-hull Dreadnoughts as they're much better than the equivalent logistics worth of smaller ships. The only reason you'd want to use Tiny/Small hulls is if you're building a Military Starbase array, in which they will serve as force multipliers or if you intend to use them as Transport-snipers or Starbase-killers.

The Positronic Torpedo 2 is by FAR the best bang-for-buck weapon in the game, better than any mass driver, but it's damage dealing ability is far less than the BHE. If you're going to build true warships, I suggest you stick with the BlackHole Eruptor and try to build an industrial planet with sufficient output to churn out a top-of-the-line Huge warship in <10 turns. If you're going to build small-hulled soft target raiders or starbase force multipliers, I think you should use the smallest weapon you can find(Quantum Torpedo 3 or, if you can get it, an HD Spike Driver).

Since I like to build a massive economy early in the game (dangerous strategy, I know), I typically just buy all my dreadnoughts. 10-20 of them is usually enough to win any war I get into, and they can be bought in 2 to 4 turns without too much trouble most of the time. Seems to be the most effective strategy so far.

Errr, AFAIK only the "missile" line has such a weapon. Beams should have the Subspace whatever, but it NEVER existed, and guns have the Neutrino Bullets, that can't compare to BHG with its attack 9 and cost 67 (BHG 16/100).

The "gun" line has the smallest base size, so they are likely the best weapon for small hulls, but the missiles have the smallest sizemod. Their value grows with the size of the ship, as they get the smallest increase in size. At 300 spaces (huge hull with all possible mini) in ship the last missile is actually smaller than the last gun, and even Positronic Torpedo II becomes smaller than BHG, but with only 75% of BHG's ship costs.

Nope, on a Huge hull, the Black Hole Generator gun is better than the Positronic Torpedo 2 missile. Since miniaturization doesn't factor into sizemods, a BHG would be size 12 doing 16 damage for 100 bc while a PosiTorp 2 would be size 14 doing 15 damage for 70 bc. The Black Hole Eruptor is also larger than the Black Hole Generator at size 14 against size 12, but 25 damage vs. 16 damage easily makes the BHE the best weapon there is(not considering it's price).

Meanwhile, the top of the beam weaponry line is broken. The Subspace Annihilator doesn't exist, so the penultimate weapon is actually Subspace Blaster. But Subspace Blaster is inferior to it's predecessor, Disruptors 3, which makes Disruptors 3 the TRUE penultimate beam weapon. So the penultimate tech, the penultimate weapon and the second-best weapon are all different for beams. And their ultimate weapon, Doom Ray, is the worst of the 3 ultimate weapons but the best known. The Doom Ray is a big, inefficient, inferior lug at size 16 doing only 22 damage at 150 bc.
