Working feverishly

Expansion pack #2: Twilight of the Arnor beta is almost here...

We are working really hard to get the pieces to the first beta of the new expansion pack for Galactic Civilizations II.  The expansion pack (Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor) comes with a lot of stuff.  One of the things we haven't been talking about are the editors.  The first beta probably won't include the editors because we just won't have time to do internal QA on them. But above is a screenshot of the new technology tree editor that is designed to make it easy for people to make their own unique technology trees.

If you want to get the beta, you will need to pre-order the expansion pack by clicking below..

I tried to create one tech for this game and I just couldn't pull it off. This will help a lot of people mod.

Will this editor only be available to those who pre-order? I know it might be a stupid question, but I hope that it will appear in the final copy. Just want to know so I can make an informed decision, thanks.

Man, humans weren't meant to have this much fun......

AWESOME!!!!

Will the planatary ground combat animation be updated at all for the beta? Is the beta just the new tech trees for the 3 races and nothing else, i.e. no editors, terror stars, etc. etc.

Cant wait! Thanks in advance

Phew I hear you! I think it was actually better in GalcivI where it was 2D, it left room to the imagination. This stuff just needs to be completely rehashed.

It also detracts from the game. Here you have awesome graphics in the rest of the game and then you invade. That's when the invasion graphics rear its ugly head.

I just hit skip so I don't have to watch it lol. I mean there is no variety at all. Just an once of variety, i.e. seeing your steller troopers in power armor or whatever as an indication you have that tech or seeing green beams firing because you have plasma tech would go a long way in making ground combat fun to watch. Ship combat is hundreds of times better to watch you see your creation firing the specific weapon.

The first beta is going to be pretty tame since the main goal is to make sure all the pathing and installation stuff (which is non-trivial) work.

Three new technology trees will be added along with updated graphics in many areas.

And yes, the final version also will get these editors.

Stay tuned.

Can't wait. Sounds like a sick/stay home day is coming up

I have a question before I pre-order : I read that there would be much graphics changes, among them some to save RAM. Could any of those changes could eventually break the game on my computer with its outdated video card (that cannot handle all of DirectX9.0c - I cannot get the ships textures for example)?

Awesome - What are the other Editors that we can expect? I know the Tech Tree and Map/Scenario/Campaign, anything else? Wow, I can't wait and we are already working on the improved Star Trek Mod, this should help tremendously.

Hmm... a tech editor, eh? Awesome, I hate working with plain text files, always gives me a headache.

Just out of curiosity, but are things like the Atlas/Fortitude modules or Terror Stars by any chance going to be in Beta 1?

In any case, I can't wait for Thursday to try out TA.

Wow, you guys just keep outperforming yourselves.

I wonder, is the fact we're surprised about the quality and quantity of this expansion more a commentary on Stardock's dedication to excellence or the lack of present in other games.

I think it is fair to say it is both. I have only been involved in two online communities before GalCiv2, those being Simcity (from 300 onwards) and Rise of Nations.

Now comparing them to Stardock...is so far from possible i could not explain. Stardock is sooo far above the commitment that those companies ever shown that it is mind numbing.

Stardock have set the benchmark for how they treat their customers and their game support. They have done it that well, that i don't really care what other games i like, i know they will not live up to my expectations....as they will be faulted by their own companies.

If I hadn't pre-ordered already I would now! This is looking like it will be a great expansion.

Would like to pre-order but a Maestro card option isn't avaliable. Cant use pay-pal because its a pre-order according to the pop-up on the checkout page. I don't own a visa or mastercard.

Stardock really need to offer more payment options if they want non americans to be able to pre-order.

Some of the features there I really like (from a modder's perspective):
-Is the tech tradable?
-Is the tech stealable?

This will help those of us working on total conversions (SW, Babylon 5, ST, etc) big-time, I think.

Although I don't see what I've been pushing for from the beginning--player-created choice techs. Doesn't change my position for the worse, but adding it would make me even that much happier.

And I've got a full week off next week. That's what I call winning the jackpot!

same here - don't have a "proper" credit card - they require a certain amount of regular income where i come from which i - as a poor university student - don't have.

A Visa Check Card works just as well if you're in the US (or elsewhere they're available)--many banks offer them even with free checking accounts. That's what I use myself (glad to be credit card free). So long as your credit isn't horrible you should have no problem getting one, there's not really any requirement since it's a debit card.

I sound like such a fanboy, but are terrorstars going to be in the first beta? How about new music? Menus? All that jazz?

Hi,

Steffen Reker am i right in assuming that you are from Germany. If so and you are a student why don't you try out Barclays card. You get both the visa and master card and you only have to proof that you are a student (matrikel nummer). Cost 12 Eur a year. Or you go to your lokal bank, like Sparkasse they give you a mastercard even if you still go to school (ok you must be 18).

Hope that helps you a bit.
