RELEASED: Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar v1.8!

Bigger, Better, Stronger

Owners of Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar can now upgrade to version 1.8.  For the past month, we've been putting v1.7 through its paces and ultimately decided due to the level of change to release it as v1.8.

The new version includes a ton of new features such as new planetary governors, an event log, a detailed lease screen, a local high score screen, updated AI, improved planetary improvement graphics, memory optimizations, improved performance, and more.

This free update is available for download via Stardock Central.

Hm, I still cannot download the patch via SDCentral. I have DA version 1.70c[b].001, SDCentral says there's an update to 1.80.093, I say "install" but after a few seconds I get the "ref 201" error about the module being no longer available...

CariElf,

Happens on a Large galaxy. On tough AI (global), didnt tweak any custom AI settings. So far Ive had it happen with 5,6,and 8 AI's. Happens about 50% of the time (yes really )

Of course there's also the planet quality issue that I am sure you guys are aware of, however I'm hoping that any other people experiencing this speak up too, because while low amounts of colonizable planets is playable, a dormant AI is not.

Thanks,

Is there a problem with the number of habitable planets under 1.8?

There are a number of bug reports claiming that new games started under
1.8 had very few habitable planets.

The number of habitable planets was reduced in an effort to reduce the memory usage.  We are going to raise it in another update shortly, but not to the previous levels.

Thats becoming ridiculous. What a hell are you guys doing with RAM? Can you maybe explain us how could habitable planets taking that much of it ? I mean for what ? Because from what I've seen in the game, 10kbytes should be more than enough to store data about even most habitable planet.

Take any other 4x game - Imperium Galactica 2 for example. Its planet mechanics is similar - you build staff where you can, many different building, moral, taxes. And whole game requires 64 mb to run. Take SE5 - very deep and complex, may be even too much complex - still requires 128 mb.
So whats the problem with GC2, that you guys have to cut habitable planets because 2GB(!!) per process cup is no longer enough for you ?

The planets themselves may well be trivial, but more of them directly leads to lots more of pretty much everything else, which does have a profound effect on the overall size of the game.

I would have to say that the number of planets under 1.8. Is a problem took over thirty turns to find a planet of a class that i could do some building on that wouldnt take 100 weeks for a ship to be built. All i seen for the first 30 turns was two, three and fours class planets. So i started a new game thinking that i need to change the settings. Nope. So i stop playing. The game is fun with more planets. And I like the game that way.. Not this 1.8 way and if it doesnt change then sorry but i will not play it.. Happy but sad Caesar...

Aaa well that does explain why I only got 4 low pq planets on a large abundant all. Att first I just thought it were something wrong, so I started a new game, but it was the same. Then I just quit the game because it didn't feel fun anymore.

I personally have not had a problem with memory before, so I hope you will find a fix for this soon.

Thanks Stardock!

Not enough habitable planets

I can't get "critical mass" infrastructure to compete with the AI with the few low-quality planets available.

How do I roll back to a previous version?

Guys please try the new build > 1.8b as the number of habitable planets have been reset to older numbers.

Thanks in advance for the "Cheers thats better! Thanks Stardock " posts
