Thinking of picking up GalCiv II: Gold edition

Hello. I've played Civ IV in the past, but never really got into it. I've loved the RTS genre in the past (at least those that were able to successfully disguise the apparently required mine resources-build buildings as quickly as possible-churn out units-throw em at your opponent(s)-micromanage it all formula.

I really find the sci-fi settings interesting, however, and was wondering if Gal Civ II was a title I could get into. TBS doesn't bother me. As a matter of fact, it kind of reduces the chaos associated with the RTS games, IMO.

I thought that perhaps if others could chime in with some of the things they liked most about Gal Civ II, I might get a better feel for whether it is a game for me.

Thanks!

Hello Q,
I'm a GalCiv2 (Gold Edition) newbie and I also never really got into Civ.
My impressions of GalCiv 2:

Positive:
I like the overall appeal of this game: Nice graphics, excellent movies and music and good old roundbased gameplay with a nice touch of humour. For me it combines the feeling of "Heroes 3" and "Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri" with a fresh design. And there's no doubt it's designed and programmed from people that care a lot about their game.

Negative:
There still seem to be some problems with Vista or the Nvidia Vista drivers - at least on my computer system. That's a big letdown for me and I won't buy the last AddOn until these problems are solved.

Buy it. They keep optimizing the memory like crazy. Usually it gets more and more difficult with each version not to have your PC crash - but not with this game. It just has it all.

My only caveat: Master this game step by step (Dark Lord, DAvatar, and then the new one - otherwise you might just be overwhelmed by it!

The Gal Civ II demo has a lot more features available. You can actually beat that one in the 100-turn limit.

GalCiv II gold demo you won't be able to beat in the 100-turn limit. Gold has so many adjustments go game balance it's almost essential.

I like TBS a lot better than RTS. TBS gives you time to think about what you're doing. I've enjoyed GC2 quite a bit. I like the sci-fi aspect of the game. Commanding fleets of space ships is much more fun than armies of humans. And, you get to design your own space ships too, very cool.
