Questions about research centers

I just started Gal Civ2 and had a few questions about researching. Is it the same if you have 5 planets and biuld 1 research center on each planet or 5 on one planet? The more research centers you have the faster the item is researched? You can only research 1 item at a time no matter how many research centers you have?
