Forced to trade techs?

Tech trading in a no trading game?

I prefer to play with tech trading off for various reasons. In my current game, the UP forced all races to trade a tech to all others. It could have been worse but not enough voted for the 3 techs option. Now I might have been able to live with this, but I didn't even get the chance to choose what tech. I recieved some very useful techs myself, and am currently winning due to some weapon and large hull techs no one else has. If the game traded one of those without asking me I will not be happy. Shouldn't this event be turned off when playing a no tech game? At the very least, shouldn't we get to pick what tech we give out?

I don't know how to tell what I gave them. I could have given them my missile tech, defence tech, or even large hulls. It should at least tell me what I gave away, don't you think?

I've just recently started a 1.7 DA beta game (I'm gigantic-map biased), and there's an Events tab that I *think* should be listing results like the ones SuperGeek wants to know.

SuperGeek's question is especially interesting to me because I only recently started flirting with the possibly "cheesy" choice to turn off tech trading. I've always been obsessed with tech superiority, and mystified by how the AIs so merrily trade techs amongst themselves while being so frakin' demanding when I try to trade with them.

The events tab only shows what I recieved, and only by saying that research on each of the techs was completed. For those interested, here are the techs I recieved:

Ultimate Logistics
Advanced Life Support
Shield Defense Theory
Laser
Habitat Improvement
Singularity Driver II
Singularity Driver III
Soil Enhancement
Missile Weapon Theory
Extended Life Support
Beam Weapon Theory
Xeno Ethics
Diplomatic Relations

I don't notice any particular system to it either. I figure it is most likely random. Again, not so great getting Xeno Ethics before I was ready. Some of those are high dollar (at this point in my game) techs that normally would be difficult to get from the AI as well.

So if you have to give 3 tech but receive 13 in return (some, like you say, very valuable to yourself) - how is that such a bad deal?

I fail to see what you are complaining about besides the randomness factor.

If the choice were left up to you, would you give any but the lowest valued techs?

It is much more fair the way it is.

Not at all. I can think of several situations where I would rather give up higher-RP techs to protect specific things, like techs that give passive bonuses, unlock a trade good, a specific colonization tech (yes, I've had this come up that early before), etc. This would vary between games, so the most valuable techs can't easily be determined. OTOH, you could use selected techs to screw with the AI - Industrial Sectors for everyone, now spend eternity upgrading!

If instead of random techs, the game gave you a list of eligible techs (those that enough other civs haven't researched so sharing them would benefit nearly everyone) it would add a bit of depth to the event. Although, if any changes were to be made to the UP, this would be pretty low on the list, compared to things like having a say on what issue to bring up at the meeting.

I believe you would be one of the very few that would be willing to give away higher value techs and possibly let the AI's catch up with you. Please don't forget that with getting three techs from each player the AI's are also getting a huge bump up as well.
Most players would only give their lowest techs and i am guessing that is why you do not get to choose.
Personally i think the automated way is by far the best way of doing it and keeps it fair on all sides.

I'm not saying I'd do it all the time. All else being equal, of course I would give away the cheap stuff. But you can tell from the tech list above, SOMEONE gave away some really cheap crud - beam/missile weapon theory compared to ultimate logistics?

That's why I suggested being able to pick from a list of "eligible" techs, say the techs that you have but less than half of the AIs have. To be fair, you would have to pick the techs you give away before you see what everyone else is sharing, to prevent duplication (if someone else is giving away xeno ethics for ex., you could pick that to effectively get out of giving one tech away).

If I must give away weapons tech, I'd rather give singularity drivers 1, 2, and 3, rather than the random choice that will give the AIs SD 3 and two other techs. It's technically possible this could happen anyway (SD 2 and 3, beam weapon theory and laser from the above list) but I'd rather be able to deliberately choose to do it.

At a bare minimum, we should at least be told what we gave away, even if we don't get to control it.

On that we are agreed I too would prefer to know what i had 'shared' with the rest of the galaxy.

This is, in my opinion, critical. I have no way of knowing if I just volunteered the tech that was winning me the war. Speaking of which, in this game the AI can now suddenly run around the galaxy at warp speed (6 mp), when they were stuck at 2 or 3 mp. Wonder how that happened?

Recently I've been playing with tech trading off. Like the previous post states, they AI are way to liberal about trading techs amongst eachother. It's like you're up against all the races combined. I like the game better without it. As far as the event, it does seem logical to disable it with tech trading off, but I'd like to disable most of those UP events.
