Space Station's

Good day everyone, after getting bored with civ 4, I decided to try this game which I heard was very fun. Well, I have enjoyed it so far. But Space Stations I still do not understand totaly. I hear, it is good to have 4 in every section that you can get them in. That is fine, but my question is, do you realy want them all over? and do you realy have to make a construtor for every damn upgrade? I mean, you will spend most of the game just building space stations.

It is good to put 4 in every sector in which you have trade routes. So that it doesn't consume your entire games, it is useful to have all your trade routes covering the same path, and for that path to be short. That way, you don't have to build so many starbases.

Yes. The Constructor uses a nanotech device to convert ITSELF into the starbase or the starbase module. No extra resources required.

In addition it is also good to have 4 for example near a planet where you really want to boost some characteristic (economy, production, influence), or if you want to vastly boost your military capabilities in a certain sector.
Other than that, there is no need to cover the galaxy with starbases - just see it as a cost/benefit thing: is it worth spending production time and build/upgrade costs on a starbase compared to the benefits it will give you?

When I'm not at war and not preparing for war, I usually build constructors at most starports, in order not to let spare production capacity go to waste. I then use these constructors for less important improvements. In most cases it's still better than having your starports building nothing at all for several weeks.

You don't NEED to build them all over, but the more you have the better it is, especially if you max out your trade routes.

It also depends on how likely it is that you'll go to war. The AI loves to target starbases of all kinds. But you may find that one your planets start getting industrial sectors, they will be able to get a constructor ourt every 3 or 4 turns.

I do like to have all of my planets covered by at least one fully upgraded (with production modules) starbase. It helps if you play with tight clusters. If the galaxy remains peaceful ill make sure my technological capital gets a few more.

Thanks for the quick answer's guys!! I think, I may need to step down to smaller galaxies than. I do know that, tight spiral galaxies seem to be better than scattered. My 1st game i did gigantic scatered, i had over 100 colonies before i decided it was to much!!

LOL, did you also put the difficulty on Suicidal?

My advice would be if you like starbases but don't want to micromanage too much: Just build 8 starbases around 1 or two of your production/trade planets. This can give you about 200% production bonus for these planets (trade is less important to win). Very noticable without too much effort to construct them. Also you may want to try the waypoint system for this purpose:
1. Create a waypoint near the planned starbase area called StarbasePoint or something.
2. Let as many planets as you can build constructors and make them automatically send the constructors off to the 'Starbasepoint'
3. Do other stuff for a number of turns while a pile of constructors is growing at the waypoint.
4. When you feel like it, build the starports.

If you're a perfectionist you can probably put the waypoint at a starbase to upgrade it as soon as a constructor arrives, but this can also be a hassle with the game constantly notifying you to upgrade a base when you're busy with other stuff.

Set everything to Rare. Believe me, too many colonies to manage will NOT be your problem. And starbases will seem much more important!

Indeed. With everything Rare, Trade Routes, Starbases, Asteroid Mines, Moons, Rings, etc. will have more impact. Each planet will be more precious.
