Some questions from a GC2 novice

Hello all!

I am still fumbling towards my first victory, and I have had some questions spring to mind:

1. Do you automatically lose the game if your home planet gets captured?
2. As a new player, should I try to colonize the planets close to me (think Mars for Earth), or hold out for those 10+ planets that my rivals always seem to scoop up?
3. Is there any way to choose the "sequence" of ships in a fleet? For example, I had a fleet of two powerful ships and one weak ship. The weak ship was in front, and kept getting hurt in battles, while the other ships didn’t take any damage…
4. I captured a planet from an enemy, but I cannot produce anything on the planet, as the build queue says "never" for the completion timeframe. Any idea why this is the case, and how I can correct it?
5. Is there any sort of Death Star weapon/ship out there?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to reply.

1. Only if it is your last planet - you can keep going as long as you have one planet left.

2. I usually go for the higher PQ planets first - but once you start to see a trickle of enemy colony ships headed your way, just grab anything you can, because there's usually a tidal wave right behind that first group.

3. No, the targeting sequence is calculated automatically during the battle. Why one ship is target first, I am not completely sure; I have a very holistic playing style. There have been a lot of extremely detailed posts over the past year on battle sequencing, though - try doing a search and you will find lots of results.

4. Most likely you don't have the right colonization tech. If you capture a radioactive world but don't have the colonization tech, you can't build anything there until you research or steal the tech. The other scenario is that your treasury is in the negative, but if that were the case, then all of your planets would be displaying Never.

5. There was such a thing in GalCiv 1; Terror Stars. Stardock is bringing them back, apparently, in the upcoming Twilight of the Arnor expansion.

Welcome to the forum, and good luck!

2. If the map is big enough, a lone Mars is going to convert to your race anyway - no need to waste ressources (let the AI develop it for you...)
3. It used to be the most aggressive ship (high offense, low defense, low HP), but it may be different in Dark Avatar (DA)
4. Look out for red dots/symbols: they say - not my kind of atmosphere

don't worry too much - you'll learn as you play

If you lose your home planet, another planet will become your capital. It never happened to me so i don't know how the planet is chosen. I also don't know if your civilization takes some sort of moral hit, etc.

get the higher PQ's first. its ok if an AI grabs Mars or the other lower planets near you. As long as there arent very many of them the will usually eventually flip to you. Or will provided an easy target in the future.

The order doesnt matter. The comouter does calculation of firepower Vs hitpoints and I think goes after the highest value; that is, the strongest ship that will be easiest to kill. Ifthis is the case then having transports in a fleet makes more sense being that they wont be targeted since they are not a threat.

You will need the correct tech for that type of planet. if you focus the production of the planet on social, you may see a time frame for completion.

The next expansion pack will have them. But they will be sun crushers.
