Tie Rule

Hey, I just wanted to verify what exactly is going on in the "tie rule." What I'm referring to is when you pit two ships (or more) against each other, sometimes they'll both "kill" each other, but one will survive the encounter. How do you determine who it is survives?

The tie rule only applies to unfleeted ships. As a matter of interest, the tie rule means that it is possible for ships to survive that would have otherwise been destroyed if in a fleet. This is due to the fact that the enemy ship's firepower is fully accounted for in a fleet encounter but not in a 1 on 1 battle if your ship is slightly more powerful.

It basically means that any less powerful enemy ship not in its own fleet, with enough firepower to kill your ship, will only get the chance to do so if you are stupid enough to use a fleet!

Okay.. so what are you referring to as per "powerful?" Is this in terms of HP, or attack? How would I know whether it would be smarter to use a fleet or a single ship in combat?

Sorry for the questions, I just like to understand it as fully as possible.

good question!

okay i like to play it safe personally, so i will try to have a ship with equal or higher hitpoints. Then it will want a higher attack value after deducting their defence amounts and adding your defence amounts (so long as the defence is appropriate to the weapons used). I am not sure what effect ship class has? So for example a tiny hulled ship with 50hp (very old and experienced) verses a medium hulled ship with 50hp but exactly the same attack rating, which would win?

The tie rule only applies to unfleeted ships.

AFAIK it applies to EVERY combat, but only in the last round of the combat. If "live" ship(s) in the last round destroy each other, the strongest survives by the tie rule.

what are you referring to as per "powerful?"

IIRC Wyndstar found out that the ship with the strongest attack value survives the battle by the tie rule, OFC if it is not destroyed in some earlier combat phase. I haven't fully tested this with a testbed, but my battles with the DredLords (somewhat - there are still issues ) confirm this. So far my rule of the thumb for those all-weapons battles is: best weapons in biggest hull. Not that I need it much. My games are won with most-defense ships.

The tie rule applies to all combat in DA. Since both sides simultaneously shoot each other, and if at the same time, they fire hard enough to kill each other, then the ship with the highest attack(or is it HP?) survives with 1 hp and the other side dies.

If it's a fleet, one ship of the more powerful fleet survives with 1 hp, and all other ships, on both sides, get destroyed.

I hope that Wyndstar is right though. I like the idea of super-miniaturization on Medium Hulls better than the idea of big, lumbering Huge Hulls.
